Promotion receives the recovery works of the church of Santa María de Lorca (18/10/2019)

The reception of the recovery works of the church of Santa María de Lorca (Murcia) took place on the 15th.

The investment of the Ministry of Development, fully financing the works, has amounted to € 1,082,798.35.

The original parish was founded on the main Arab mosque, located at the eastern end of the castle grounds during the Reconquest (S. XIII), reign of D. Jaime de Aragón.

Of Gothic Levantine, it has three naves with two sections in longitudinal direction, presbytery of rectangular plan and chapels of identical form, continuing with the sacristy, on which the tower rises.

A polygonal-style dressing room was opened on the headland, in the 18th century.

The Church, included in the declaration of historical-artistic ensemble of the urban nucleus of Lorca of 1964, after Law 16/1985, on Spanish Historical Heritage became BIC.

The initial state of ruin, produced largely by the earthquake of May 2011, showed a property without any type of roof, keeping the walls of the façade and the bell tower, but with serious stability problems, together with Some interior elements.

The works have focused on the structural rehabilitation of the ships and the tower, as well as the recovery of the interior space of the building.

In a next phase the City Council will provide the property with the necessary infrastructure so that its use is part of the cultural equipment of Lorca.

With this intervention of the church of Santa María, the Ministry will have intervened in five rehabilitation actions in that town, with a total contribution of around 4 million euros: restoration of the Wall, consolidation of the Palace of Guevara, restoration of the Porch of San Antonio and emergency works in the church of San Mateo, according to sources from the Ministry in a statement sent to Murcia.com

This new action demonstrates the Government's commitment to protect and safeguard Spanish Cultural Heritage.

Architectural and 1.5% Cultural Rehabilitation Programs

The aforementioned action is carried out within the framework of the Architectural Heritage Rehabilitation Program, which consists in the execution of relevant works for the rehabilitation of Spanish architectural heritage and provision of public facilities with the Ministry's own budgets.

In these cases, Fomento acts as a contracting authority for the works, with plans to allocate more than 22 million euros in 2019.

On the other hand, the Ministry also finances another important number of actions through the 1.5% Cultural Program, which constitutes one of the instruments of the General State Administration to respond to the constitutional mandate by which the Public Powers must guarantee the conservation and promote the enrichment of the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the peoples of Spain and the assets that comprise it.

Following the establishment of the new competitive competition procedure, in the VII Collaboration Agreement between the Ministries of Development and the then Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, there are now three calls for published aid.

The last one, published in the Official State Gazette on 06/05/18, involves the financing of new actions for a total maximum amount of 51 million euros.
