Aguas de Lorca launches the Aquae STEM project to promote scientific and technological vocations among 200 students from 4 Lorca schools (30/10/2019)

Aguas de Lorca and its foundation, the Aquae Foundation, presented this morning at the Guevara Palace in Lorca the Aquae STEM project whose objective is to promote scientific and technological vocations among 200 students from 4 schools in the municipality.

The event has been chaired by the Mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos and has had the interventions of the Water Manager of Lorca, Antonio Franco, the General Director of Hidrogea, Inmaculada Serrano, and the Director of Sustainable Development and Innovation of Hidrogea, Gustavo Calero, as well as with the presence of representatives of the educational community of the 4 participating schools.

This initiative is part of a large-scale national project that aims to impact 3,500 girls and 7,000 students in 50 centers in Spain over the next 3 years (3 school years).

For this, different geographical areas have been defined - Galicia, Andalusia, Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla León and the Murcia Region - where the program will begin its action.

200 of the 400 girls who will benefit in the Murcia Region of Aquae STEM are students belonging to the San José, Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Ana Caicedo Richard and Petra González schools, which have already included Aquae STEM in their school program and whose teachers are currently in the training phase.

This means that 50% of the girls on which it will impact on a regional project are Lorca.

The dual purpose of Aquae STEM converges directly with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, on the one hand, contributing to the creation of STEM vocations (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) among students from 2nd to 6th of Education Primary;

and on the other, sensitizing the immediate environment of these students - classmates, teachers and families - so that they recognize and value female talent.

The program is configured by a set of practical activities designed to arouse the interest of students in STEMs through the resolution of challenges, through innovation and creativity as vehicles of inspiration.

The activities include debates and workshops where challenges related to sustainable development will be raised, and more specifically on the world of water, which will be resolved through the design, programming and construction of prototypes, with the help of a kit with material that will be put to disposition of each participant

The demand for STEM professionals grows to a greater extent than that of professionals from other sectors and the number of young people who opt for STEMs does not grow at the same rate.

According to Eurostat data, in Spain, only 13 out of every 1,000 people have completed studies in these fields, of which only 26% are women.

The Aquae STEM is based on five key principles that guide the program: promoting STEM learning environments at early school ages in a sustained manner over time;

encourage girls' interest in STEM careers;

favor girls' access to STEM experiences through differentiated training processes within the framework of a community of equals;

Strengthen girls' confidence in their talent and skills for these environments, sharing experiences and results with their classmates;

and involve families and the educational community.
