The City Council of Lorca issues an institutional declaration to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the Spanish Constitution (05/12/2019)

Institutional declaration on the Spanish Constitution of the mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos, as well as of the municipal spokesmen of all the political groups with representation in the City council of Lorca.

"On December 6, we commemorate the 41st anniversary of the democratic referendum by which the Spaniards approved the 1978 Constitution.

The Constitution has been during all this time the framework of coexistence of all Spaniards.

Emerged from the agreement and the pact, the constitutional text is the most outstanding and transcendent political work of the entire twentieth century.

With the consensus and participation of all ideological sensibilities, he had in his approval by referendum his greatest guarantee for Spain to move from a dictatorial regime to a democratic regime.

It is the Constitution that guarantees the exercise and protection of rights and freedoms, establishes a social and democratic State of Law, proclaims national sovereignty and universal suffrage, and recognizes the right to autonomy within the indissoluble unity.

There are 41 years of democratic coexistence, of alternation of central, regional and local governments, of consolidation of a territorial model and of social and political pluralism.

With the 1978 Constitution and the opening of the democratic period, Spain achieved international recognition and homologation with European democratic states.

Public authorities must enforce and ensure compliance with constitutional requirements, under the protection of which, Spain has experienced the longest sustained period of freedom, peace, economic stability and social welfare in its history.

After these 41 years in which Spanish society is very different from that of the Constituent period, it is time to consider the challenges and challenges that Spain must face.

The modifications and adjustments to be made in the constitutional text must respect, not only the mechanisms of reform, but also arouse the broad social consensus that allowed the birth of the Magna Carta.

Together we must ensure that these 41 years of collective success, harmonious coexistence and enjoyment of freedoms and rights remain the axis of action for all citizens, institutions and their legitimate representatives. "
