The castle of Lorca will host this weekend the celebration of the Jewish festival of Hannucká (27/12/2019)

The Councilor for Tourism, Francisco Morales, has presented the activities on the occasion of 'The Feast of Lights', a commemoration of Jewish culture that was already celebrated more than 500 years ago in the Jewish quarter of the Fortaleza del Sol.

The Councilor for Tourism of the City of Lorca, Francisco Morales, has presented, this morning, the activities scheduled for the celebration of the Hannucká festival, organized by the San Clemente Federation in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and whose purpose is object to publicize this tradition of the Jewish religion, which was already celebrated during the Middle Ages in the Synagogue located in the grounds of the castle of Lorca.

The Hannucká festival, celebrated by Jewish culture, recalls the miracle by which a minimum amount of oil to light the Menorah of Time burned for 8 days in a row, time needed to produce a new supply of oil.

Since then, in the Jewish culture this holiday is celebrated for eight days, where a lamp is lit every night, taking the oil from the main lamp or "shamash" until reaching the eighth.

The mayor of Tourism has indicated that "this year the Hannucká takes place from Sunday 22 to Monday 30 December. To celebrate it, from this council, through 'Lorca Workshop of Time', a schedule of activities for the entire family on the weekend of 28 and 29 so that we can all know the particularities of this 'Fiesta de las Luces' and how the inhabitants of the Jewish quarter nestled in the castle of Lorca celebrated it. First, the Synagogue will be visited, where we can contemplate the replica of the Hannucká or oil lamp that appeared in the excavations of the Archaeological Park of the Castle of Lorca and that already in the XV century served to celebrate this party in one of the houses of the Barrio de Alcalá. "

Francisco Morales added that "at 12:30 pm, part of the castle will be traversed by the hand of a Jewish character who will tell visitors more details about the intimate party, then visit the Alfonsina Tower, tower under which the lorquinos Jews felt protected ".

Morales has indicated that "the cafeteria 'Las Caballeriza del Castillo Lorca' also joins this Jewish holiday and for this it will offer a Sephardic-inspired menu, such as eggplant hummus, vegetable couscous, or lamb roast with vegetables, a good brooch to complete this plan in the castle's courtyard with views of the Guadalentín Valley. "

It should be remembered that on December 28 at 6 pm the Federation of San Clemente will proceed to the act of lighting the Hannucká in the Synagogue of the Castle of Lorca.

The president of the San Clemente Federation, Luis Torres del Alcázar, stressed that, "in order to involve the different groups of the city of Lorca and the entire region, different institutions and their representatives will turn on each of the luminaries After the "shamash" is lit, the first candle is always lit by the mayor, as the first representative of Lorca ".

During this act, "sufganiots", typical sweets of the Jewish culture prepared by the Federation of Women's Organizations of Lorca, which collaborates in this event, can be tasted. "

As a novelty this year, celebrating the entry of Lorca in "The Network of Jewish Quarters of Spain, Caminos de Sefarad" at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday there will be a free concert in the square of the synagogal space of the Castle of Lorca by Jota Martínez Ensemble-duo under the title 'The woman, custody of the Sephardic tradition' music and song of the Spanish Jews in the diaspora, organized by the Department of Tourism of Lorca and the 'Red de Juderías de Espańa, Caminos de Sefarad'.
