While the glorious past of Lorca is being sold at FITUR, rain and public neglect throw a section of the medieval city wall near La Merced to the ground (23/01/2020)

In October 2016, the Municipal Spokesman of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Pedro Sosa, was interested in the unfortunate state that presented the isolated section of the medieval wall of the city of Lorca located on the slope of the hill of the Castle that faces the river, in the vicinity of the Convent of La Merced.

Sosa denounced then that the restoration works of the medieval wall of the city of Lorca, carried out in the surroundings of La Merced, had left forgotten the stretch of canvas wall located just at the beginning of the first curve of the descent of the Bridge of the District in the direction of the Parish, in the back of the ship that the White Pass has in that place.

The councilor of IU-V warned at that time that "that stretch of wall was losing its crust of lime and that at some points there was a collapse of the inner structure of the wall."

Sosa also drew regulations, and warned the local government of the moment that PEPRI, in its article 204, proposed several actions to be carried out for the Protection and Conservation of the Wall, its canvases and towers, which were not being executed.

The mayor of IU-V affirms that if today we have lost a new stretch of wall canvas it will not be because they were not warned, and it holds both the regional government and the two local governments (the PP and the PSOE) responsible for this important Loss of our history and our heritage, also generating situations of danger due to the collapse and fall of the wall to a public road traveled by vehicles and pedestrians.

Finally, Sosa says that the City Council should take action on the matter immediately, promote the appropriate initiatives for the rehabilitation of that section and, on the way, ask the regional government for explanations on the 30,000 euros of public money spent on four plates of Tin of the cheap one that, of course, did not fix in any way the problem neither cultural, nor patrimonial, nor of road safety that supposes a ruinous and unstable building like the mentioned one.

Sosa has concluded by stating that "we find it unheard of that half local government of PSOE and Citizens go on an excursion through the FITUR of Madrid, selling the glorious past of Lorca, while something as significant of that past as a medieval wall falls to the ground by the laziness of those who govern.
