About one hundred Lorca students benefit from the 'Active Families' program that promotes physical exercise (20/02/2020)

This past February 10, classes began at the IES Francisco Ros Giner sports center, which take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5 pm.

And so that more students can join this initiative, this Wednesday a second group has joined the IES Prince of Asturias.

The Councilors for Sports, Education and Health of the City of Lorca, Irene Jódar, Antonia Pérez and José Ángel Ponce, respectively, presented this afternoon, together with the Director General of Planning, Research, Pharmacy and Citizen Services of the CARM, María Teresa Martínez and the Manager of Health Area 3, Enrique Casado present the 'Activa Familias' program that is currently carried out in 11 municipalities and 15 health centers in the Region.

The Councilor for Sports has detailed that "the 'Activa' program promotes physical activity by prescribing exercise by the health professionals of Primary Care of the Murcia Health Service, in collaboration with the municipalities, which yield sports facilities, and the Foundation for Training and Research of the Region ".

Irene Jódar explained that "very aware of the need to continue promoting physical activity in our municipality, from the General Directorate of Planning, Research, Pharmacy and Citizen Services of the Region of Murcia proposed the expansion of the active program, with the objective of developing, since 2020, the "Active Families" program.

Jódar Pérez recalled that this 'Activa Familias' program has as its main objective to intervene on the life habits of under-active children or those who are overweight or obese, involving families in the development of healthy habits.

The mayor said that "in October last year a first meeting was convened with the heads of the Department of Education, Health and Sports, and medical center staff to publicize this program and begin to define the selection process of the participants, before a second meeting with the teachers of primary education of the municipality in order to explain the process to them and to begin with the process of derivations ".

"In mid-January there were already more than 25 referrals, so a first group started classes this past February 10 at the IES Francisco Ros Giner sports center, which will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5 pm At present, there are more than 75 referrals that have come from the health centers, so the involvement of fathers, mothers, health workers and teachers is being more than remarkable, "according to the councilor.

Jódar Pérez has advanced that "with the objective that more children could join this program, in addition this Wednesday, February 19, a second group has started classes in the sports courts of the IES Prince of Asturias, which will take place on Mondays and Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

For his part, the mayor of Health, José Ángel Ponce, said that "obesity is a pathology that is mainly characterized by an increase in total body fat. Numerous organisms linked to health, development of childhood and youth , certify in this regard that an adequate intake of nutrients and the performance of physical exercise allows obtaining numerous health benefits that contribute to the physical, psychological and social well-being of the child ".

For her part, the Councilor for Education has highlighted "the importance of fleeing a sedentary life and playing sports in schools, where in addition to studying you also learn issues related to social and cultural development."

It should be remembered that the 'Active' program aims to reduce the prevalence and incidence of chronic diseases that derive from risk factors such as physical inactivity or sedentary lifestyle.

Through this program the prescription of physical exercise is incorporated as an instrument of prevention or therapy for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity or depression, among others, and since its inception, in 2010 around 7,000 patients participated and is present in 28 municipalities of the Region.
