detail of Lorca

We are Lorca Region denounces the "ecocide" that is being perpetrated in the municipality (06/03/2020)

We repeatedly see that the ecosystem where our city of Lorca sits and its tree mass continues to be attacked by poor management, lack of vision, environmental sensitivity, or simply ignorance by the local executive, both current and former.

In recent years, more than 500 trees of special protection interest have been systematically felled, taking advantage of various works or arrangements.

As in the old Eagles road, eucalyptus and centennial pine trees have been cut;

in La Parroquia (Mata house), 60 felled adult trees;

in the Rambla Mata 150 adult trees, etc.

Recall also (2015) the uprooting of palm trees in the neighborhood of San José, roundabout and Avenida Granada, even against the opinion of different associations and sustainable mobility platforms that showed their disagreement.

Likewise, on January 5, 2016, the stone pine (pinus pinea) was cut down, located in the area of the Viña neighborhood, with an age of approximately 300 years;

On August 28, 2018, 9 adult trees in Alameda Cervantes (Jacaranda Mimosifolia and Schimus Molle or fake pepper).

With the new local government, things have not changed, prunings have been carried out in streets and avenues of the urban area, as in the Avenida Europa (which does not cease to be "upside down"), or in Rafael Maroto street.

On November 8, 2019, 5 Jacarandas Mimosifolia were annihilated, at the exit of the San Cristóbal neighborhood and last month, (February 27), a centennial oak tree plus an adult eucalyptus on the Quijero road.

The mentioned trees had a request from the "Landscape Quality" platform to include it in the Lorca monumental tree registry.

If the devastation mentioned is serious, the more serious it is that there are no serious and effective policies to improve the urban and peripheral environment of our city.

According to the study carried out by the European Environmental Agency, Lorca only has 1/3 of the forest mass of a healthy environment for the development of life, however in our city far from populating or repopulating with afforestation and reforestation, they are devastated Trees without any shame.

It may be necessary to transplant trees, as a result of the new urban development projects, or the danger that the tree specimen in question may entail, but there are techniques that ensure the survival of a transplanted tree by 90%, which is why it is not It is necessary to liquidate the trees that have belonged to the landscape environment of the City and that have lived with several generations, providing shade and oxygen, trapping harmful particles and scenic beauty.

The environmental improvement with the increase of the "ideal" tree mass in the interior of the cities and in its periphery, substantially improves the quality of the air, providing oxygen, trapping PM 2'5 and 10 particles (demonstrably harmful), without forgetting Tropospheric ozone gas pollution peaks (sometimes double the levels allowed by WHO) of an ecosystem.

The changes that occur in a positive way in the environment of a City like Lorca, will not only improve the health of the population, but also, will also contribute to environmental improvement and climate change globally, because where there are trees there is oxygen and shadow, and where there is shadow the air cools.

Therefore we claim the following activities:

Create a table of environmental ideas, where all political organizations and platforms that want to participate and are in favor of environmental protection and improvement can do so.

Create an eco-city mailbox with ecological suggestions for citizens, in which ideas, initiatives, etc. can be collected or environmental aggressions of battered spaces can be brought to the fore.

The objectives are:

Promote citizen participation in future environmental projects and activities.

Raise public awareness of the importance of conservation of the environment where we are involved, so that they can encourage and promote activities in this regard.

Improve the environmental environment and the development of daily life in a healthier and more sustainable way, inside and outside the urban area.
