The Mayor agrees with LorcaBiciudad a Work Table to encourage the use of the Bicycle (06/03/2020)

Yesterday there was a meeting that was given due importance, both from the Government Team and the LorcaBiciudad Association.

In addition to the Mayor, Diego José Mateos, the councilors Isabel Casalduero and Irene Jódar, of Development and Infrastructure and Public Transport and Mobility, respectively, attended.

Special mention deserves the assistance of José Ángel Ponce, Councilor for Health, an area whose involvement seems essential, because air pollution also has a lot to do with mobility.

Enrique Berruezo, municipal planning and mobility technician, also attended.

On behalf of LorcaBiciudad, Pascuala Peñas, Ginés Celdrán and Manuel Martín attended.

Objectives and claims

On the part of the association the objective of the meeting was to improve organizational synergies with the new local administration, so that all the councils move towards the advantages of a new city model.

Also to show his disagreement with some action he considers wrong.

Mainly when it comes to the possibility of replacing projects with bike lanes.

This has already happened on the newly created street between the level crossing of the Marin Road with that of the Alameda de Cervantes, when the large surrounding lots are already being used as parking lots, with the authorization of their owners to the City Council.

The case of Santa Clara Avenue was also pointed out, at the height of the Gold Fountain, which in its day was projected with a bike path from the roundabout to the Old Bridge, and which has also been canceled.

In this case, apparently due to heritage care reasons, because there is a sidewalk on the rise of the bridge that is protected by Culture.

These streets will be marked as "cyclocalles".

The Camino Marín is another case of a road that perfectly admits a bike lane, but that will initially be used for parking.

The Mayor described the measure as provisional, while the works that will soon begin in Jerónimo Santa Fe will last and will prevent many neighbors from entering their fords.

But he assured that once that work was delivered, and even if possible before, the necessary space for the construction of that bike path is transferred.

As for the new Jerónimo Santa Fe, LorcaBiciudad considers it essential that it has a bicycle lane to prevent bicycles from suffering the damage of Juan Carlos I Avenue and to form a Basic Network that really encourages the bike in our city.

The new Law of Ecological Transition

The Mayor was at all times empathic with the claims of the cycling association, although he showed reservations as to what concerns the decision to pedestrianize Juan Carlos Avenue, while the Central round is not finished.

At least it was proposed to start pedestrianizing it with some regularity known to the population, for example every Friday and Saturday afternoon.

This measure is increasingly requested by neighbors, merchants and hoteliers and we believe it should already be a reality.

Diego José Mateos also said he was waiting to see the demands that the one that seems imminent Law of Ecological Transition will bring, by which, the cities of more than fifty thousand inhabitants will have to take measures to restrict the traffic.

Work table

In order that the agreements of the meeting could be carried out with concrete measures, it was agreed to constitute, by the Mobility Department, a Work Table with the primary objective of planning a continuous network of bike lanes that offers comfort and sufficient confidence for most of the population and exponentially growing users of non-polluting media, such as bicycles or other vehicles with little environmental impact than cars or motorcycles, such as electric scooters.

It will consist of councilors, technicians and representatives of the association LorcaBiciudad and other entities interested in the environment or the sport of cycling.

Car parks in Lorca

LorcaBiciudad defended the idea that, if the soil and air are public, they must be protected for the health and habitability of all citizens.

Therefore, he considers that in the cities of the 21st century, no one can demand a space to park his car on public roads.

In this regard, the Mayor advanced some project that is already being worked on.

Dissuasive parking yes, but in the perimeter of the city, not in the center, because if they do not become points of attraction of motorized traffic that again cause traffic jams, pollution and more inhospitable streets for citizens.

And especially for children and the elderly.

Parking lots are in Lorca.

But as in any city worth its salt, you have to pay to get the car.

And for more money than in Lorca, whose car parks offer lower rates than in other cities.

LorcaBiciudad prepares a report on this aspect, which will be published soon.
