Community and City Council sign an agreement for the start-up of the Casa del Artesano de Lorca (10/03/2020)

The Casa del Artesano de Lorca is launched with the aim of providing artisans of the city of the sun a meeting place where they can make their live demonstrations, set up exhibitions, conduct courses and workshops, as well as expose the products of the artisans registered in the Artisan Registry of the Region of Murcia.

It is a building located in the Old Baker's Poster, in the heart of the historic center of the city.

The Minister of Enterprise, Industry and Portavocía, Ana Martínez Vidal, and the Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Handicraft of Lorca, Francisco Morales, signed yesterday the collaboration agreement on the matter that "is another example of the revaluation of the figure of the craftsman and of our firm commitment to this sector, proof of this are the more than 800,000 euros that we allocate in this year's budgets for Crafts, "said Martínez Vidal.

The municipality of Lorca thus becomes a reference for handicrafts, which helps to spread and teach the old crafts, while maintaining the cultural heritage of the Region of Murcia.

Lorca has 143 artisans registered in the Official Register of the Region of Murcia, of which 16 are self-employed and 21 companies and that add 106 workers dedicated to crafts.

Among the most representative trades are potter-potters, weavers of jarapas, bakers and confectioners, chacineros-charcuteros, leather goods, artistic metalworkers, lace makers, embroiderers, plasterers, saddlers, locksmiths and painters-painters.

For its part, the Regional Center of Handicrafts of Lorca already marked a milestone by becoming the first center of these characteristics built throughout Spain and opened in 1988. This was conceived as an instrument for the dissemination and promotion of the Handicrafts of the Region of Murcia, through permanent and temporary exhibitions, information center for the public and training for artisans.

Martínez Vidal explained that "from the regional government we will continue to support the artisanal sector as a sign of cultural identity of the Region, due to the importance of crafts as part of the heritage and as an engine of the economy."
