Pollution in Lorca before COVID-19 And after? (21/04/2020)

| Pollution in Lorca: suspended particles, NO2 and tropospheric ozone | The “normality” of air quality in Lorca is reflected in this article, which aims to explain what the pollution problems are that threaten the lungs and hearts of the people who inhabit this land.Whoever is informed knows that confinement has reduced contamination to the lowest levels of the last decade, but… do we aspire to return to that “normality”?Although it is not always possible, for example due to Saharan dust, it is in our hands to avoid or reduce numerous spikes in contamination.

For this reason, LorcaBiciudad is committed to a model change based on the semi-pedestrianization of the city, limiting the motorized vehicle to residents only (with regulated exceptions) and favoring parking at entrances to the city and not in the center.

And all without waiting for a Climate Change Law that will force these measures to be taken, but it is not yet known when it will be a reality.

What is a reality is pollution, which we analyze in this article.Coincidentally, the City Council of Lorca publishes in parallel to our study the news that "Pollution falls in Lorca by 30 percent during the period of confinement due to the state of alarm".

Given the evidence, the conclusion is obvious: we must reduce the use of private motorized traffic and favor less polluting means such as bicycles, electric skates, etc ...The city of Lorca cannot wait indefinitely for the rounds to conclude.

You must ensure as a priority for people's health and take this problem seriously and follow some basic rules of coexistence that, with each passing day, are more of "survival"Knowing the causes that cause these overcoming is essential to understand the sanitary and preventive measures that we must take.

The easy thing for any authority is to do nothing and downplay it, but out of responsibility, you have to act now.

Fortunately, the administrations begin to react, although some with the handbrake of certain economic interests whose priority is not collective health.

And citizens also have a lot to say and act.How many premature deaths correspond to Lorca due to air pollution? It should not be forgotten that studies carried out by the European Environment Agency quantify in 25 / 30,000 the annual deaths of people who die prematurely in Spain (432,000 throughout Europe) due to the pollution caused by the combustion of motor vehicles.POLLUTION AND COVID-19: Poor air quality is being pointed out by scientists and independent health organizations as a facilitator of the contagion and conditioner of mortality from Covid-19 What are the biggest threats due to contamination that Lorca suffers? The main pollutants are suspended particles (PM10), tropospheric ozone (O3) and to a lesser extent nitrogen oxides (NO2, NOx)The study has had the review of Ecologists in Action of the Region of Murcia and is published on our website www.lorcabiciudad.es For its interest to all citizens, we believe it deserves some dissemination.

Thanks for lending it to us!The LorcaBiciudad Board of Directors
