IU calls for unity to approve a contingency plan that minimizes the effects of the COVID-19 crisis in Lorca (04/05/2020)

The councilor for this training, Gloria Martín, recalled that the consequences of the pandemic must also be addressed from a gender perspective, since being a woman confers, from the outset, disadvantages when facing it.

She also regretted that only IU-Greens has met with the Federation of Women's Organizations of Lorca to consult the measures to be approved in the extraordinary plenary session The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martín, has regretted that the policies related to gender equality and against male violence are "the great forgotten" by some parties with representation in the City of Lorca.

In this sense, he has asked the twenty-five councilors of the municipal corporation for "common sense" to elaborate and approve a "contingency plan" that serves to minimize the effects of the pandemic in Lorca "in the short, medium and long term." According to Martín, she and Pedro Sosa, also from IU-Verdes, are the only councilors who have consulted the Federation of Women's Organizations of Lorca (FOML) about the measures that will be debated in the extraordinary plenary session on Tuesday to tackle the crisis.

generated by COVID-19.

The councilor attributed this fact to the lack of "sensitivity" of some parties that have even opposed the validation of the Decree-Law of urgent measures in the field of protection and assistance to victims of gender violence in the face of the coronavirus crisis . For the councilor of IU-Verdes it is "demoralizing" that everyone recognizes the work being done by the hundreds of lorquins who sew masks or gowns in solidarity, but that no municipal group, except that of Izquierda Unida, wants to hear the contributions they have to make women or to include their voices in decision-making at the local level. "Some do not understand that this crisis must also be addressed from a gender perspective, since being a woman confers, at the outset, disadvantages when facing it," said Martín.

And is that for the mayor of IU-Greens, the economic consequences of the pandemic could occur, again, with greater virulence in women "if we do nothing to avoid it." And it is that, in previous crises, "women have taken the brunt of the increase in unemployment and we have especially accused job insecurity and lack of job security," Martín recalled.

Therefore, it is necessary to "establish an additional economic emergency line" and improve conciliation and care measures for minors.

"In a context of crisis and foreseeable massive destruction of employment, public authorities must ensure that there is no discrimination based on gender, "he said. Another problem that especially affects women is the one generated by the imposition of telematic procedures, which has resulted in that, due to the digital divide and the lack of access to new technologies, many are having difficulties paying the water bills or make a simple appointment with your family doctor. Among the priorities, Martín has asked that "face-to-face" care for women victims of gender violence be considered an "essential service" in the City Council and that it be recovered following the necessary safety and hygiene measures.

"We are concerned that ill-treatment may have increased due to the increased tension in the home due to confinement," said Martín, who recalled that "telephone assistance is not a resource that provides sufficient guarantees when the victim is forced to stay by his attacker 24 hours a day without any privacy.

" In this regard, he has asked the councilor for Equality, Antonia Pérez, to make public the data on care for women victims of abuse in Lorca during the health crisis, how many of them have made use of the campaign #mascarilla19, and explain if there have been an increase in requests to move to foster homes.

In this sense, it has also demanded to know if the City Council has provided some type of temporary housing solution, for example, in hotels, for the applicants of this protection measure. IU-Verdes also shares with the FOML the concern about paralysis in gender violence courts, which, among other issues, is slowing down the problems generated by the non-payment of child support payments by women. Finally, IU-Verdes has transferred the concern of the FOML about the use of funds from the State Pact against gender violence for Lorca, which are finalist, and shares with this important group of women the need to recover the " democratic normality "in the municipality with the holding of ordinary plenary sessions and their live broadcast.

Also that the agreements adopted at the government boards are made public on the website of the city council.
