Lorca registers an increase in PM10 particle levels due to an episode of Saharan dust intrusion (02/07/2020)

José Luis Ruiz Guillén: "from the City of Lorca we recommend optimizing actions such as rising temperatures in air conditioning in houses and public buildings, thus minimizing energy consumption". The Councilor for the Environment of the City of Lorca, José Luis Ruiz Guillén, reported this morning on the increase in PM10 levels, according to the pollution records of the air quality website of the General Directorate for the Environment of the Autonomous Community. Ruiz explained that "the PM10 particle level measurement station located in our municipality collected that last Tuesday, June 30, the recommended limit was exceeded, reaching 51 micrograms per cubic meter (µg / m3) on average daily.

" The mayor has detailed that "yesterday, July 1, this concentration of particles amounted to 61 µg / m3 all this coinciding with the episode of strong intrusion of air masses of African origin, the popularly known as Saharan dust, which is affecting southeast of the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands.

" Ruiz Guillén has indicated that "in both cases we are at level 1, that of prevention, of the Protocol of the framework PM10 and NO2" and has advanced that "due to weather forecasts and according to the models consulted, this concentration will be maintained for the next days". The Councilor for the Environment has revealed that "with the aim of mitigating this rise in the concentration of particles, produced by the natural movements of air masses from Africa, the Lorca City Council recommends optimizing actions such as the rise of the temperatures in the air conditioners of houses and public buildings, thus minimizing energy consumption, the use of public transport on the move and the use of deterrent parking lots on the outskirts of the city to avoid, as far as possible, the stops and sudden starts, performing efficient driving, avoiding the burning of stubble and agricultural margins as well as other preventive measures in relation to health, such as not doing intense physical exercise outdoors, are some of these recommendations.
