These tests have confirmed that the virus was already in Barcelona in March 2019, a year before the pandemic was declared.The Councilor for Water in the city of Lorca for the Popular Party, Ángel Meca, has proposed that the municipal company that manages the treatment and supply of water in our municipality, Aguas de Lorca, undertake an analysis of all the samples preserved from the waters which deals with the objective that we Lorca have a study of the possible presence of remains of coronavirus in recent years.
We are talking about going one step further with respect to the request that we put on the table weeks ago, when we demanded that a systematic analysis of COVID-19 be carried out in these waters, a request that was correctly collected by Hidrogea.The reason for this new initiative of the Popular Party is to know from what approximate date there is a trace of COVID-19 in the sewage system of our municipal area, given that just a few days ago it was found that the coronavirus was circulating, for example in Barcelona since March 12, 2019, that is, a year before the pandemic that is affecting us was declared.
What we want is to know if a similar situation has existed in Lorca.
To do this, it would be enough to analyze the samples from previous months, at least the last year and a half, to verify this situation and have the most refined information in this regard.We must bear in mind that this type of study is proving very useful for the scientific community to have the data that contributes to improving the protocols and, especially, to detect possible outbreaks, so that the measures among the population can be take as quickly and effectively.
We are talking about a methodology that is not only being developed in Spain, but has also allowed verifying that the wastewater revealed that COVID-19 was present in Italian cities such as Turin, Milan or Bologna since December 2019.It has been precisely a study carried out by the Entity of Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment of Murcia, in collaboration with the CSIC and the University of Valencia, which has shown that the virus was in Lorca, and appeared in wastewater, up to 16 days before the health authorities confirmed the first infection.
The water that reaches the wastewater treatment stations contains RNA from the virus, but the water that comes out purified is clean.The effectiveness of this mechanism has the support, for example, of the Spanish Society of Virology, whose president, Albert Bosch, has stated a few days ago that this analysis system allows literally "much anticipation of the presence of the virus in the population" and "leaves a margin of time to act immediately." This type of analysis is routinely performed in many countries to monitor the presence in the population of both other viruses and multiple bacteria.
