Avoid heat stroke and sunburn (09/07/2020)

| The City Council of Lorca is carrying out, together with the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Red Cross, an information campaign to avoid heat stroke and sunburn | Throughout this morning 400 bottles of water will be distributed, 1,000 samples of sun creams donated by the Hefame Foundation of the INTERAPOTHEK brand, as well as brochures detailing the recommendations that citizens must follow in the face of high temperatures. The councilor for Health and Consumption of the City of Lorca, José Angel Ponce Díaz, presented this morning, the information campaign launched from this management area together with the Spanish Association Against Cancer, the Red Cross of Lorca and the Department of Emergencies , due to the high temperatures expected for this summer. The Councilor for Health has indicated that "for this reason an information table has been installed in the Alameda de la Constitución where the Spanish Association Against Cancer will be, and another at the entrance to the Weekly Market where the Red Cross will be, to make known the recommendations that we must follow with the aim of avoiding heat stroke and sunburn ". José Ángel Ponce Díaz has detailed that "throughout this morning 400 bottles of water will be distributed, 1,000 samples of sun creams donated by the Hefame Foundation of the INTERAPOTHEK brand, as well as information leaflets detailing the recommendations that the citizens before high temperatures edited by the Ministry of Health of the Region of Murcia ". The mayor of Health has referred to the recommendations to prevent problems that heat can cause in our health, among which stand out drinking a lot of water or liquids without waiting to be thirsty, except if there is a medical contraindication; avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, tea or cola and very sugary ones.

On days of intense heat, stay in cool places, in the shade and, if possible, spend at least two hours in a heated place; taking a cool shower or bath, as well as using sunscreen creams even on cloudy days, as UV radiation breaks through the clouds and is reflected in water, sand, grass and snow. At home, the tips to follow are to lower the blinds preventing the sun from directly entering; do not open windows when the outside temperature is higher; avoid using machines and appliances that can produce heat in the hottest hours.

From 35 ° C inside the house, a fan only moves the air, it does not cool it.

Use all the traditional measures at your fingertips. Also make light meals that help to replace the salts lost through sweat (salads, fruits, vegetables, gazpachos or juices); avoid outdoor activities in the hottest hours, especially if the activities are intense; and in the case of having to stay outside try to do it in the shade, wear light and light-colored clothing, protect yourself from the sun, wear a hat, cool, comfortable and breathable shoes. The mayor of Health has specified that "the elderly, especially those who live alone or are dependent, the sick (people with a lot of weight, with diminished mental faculties, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, respiratory, renal, neurological, diabetes ...

) or medicated (anticholinergic, antihistamines, phenothiazines, amphetamines, psychotropic drugs, diuretics, beta-blockers ...) and children suffer the most problems as a result of heat, which, among others, can cause skin irritations and cramps.

Loss of water and mineral salts through sweat, if not replaced, can lead to headaches, dizziness, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea and vomiting, and even slight rises in body temperature. José Ángel Ponce recalled that "there is an increase in the incidence of skin cancers in light-skinned populations around the world, and excessive exposure to the sun, which in addition to increasing the risk of skin cancer, accelerates skin aging and causes eye damage.

" It should be noted that, in the summer season of last year, between June 1 and September 15 the current maximum and / or minimum temperature thresholds (Tª) were exceeded, established at 34 ° C and 23 ° C, respectively, in 54 days .

Of these, in 33 days only the maximum temperature threshold was exceeded, in 7 days only the minimum temperature threshold was exceeded, and in 14 days both thresholds were simultaneously exceeded.

The months of July and August were those with the highest number of days with temperatures above the thresholds, specifically for 26 days in July and 21 in August.
