The City Council of Lorca intensifies the tasks of surveillance and control of the tiger mosquito with the installation of new traps in Zarcilla de Ramos, La Paca, La Parroquia and La Listen (21/07/2020)

In addition to the fumigation works, the Department of Health continues with the work of disinfection against cockroaches and rodent control, both in the urban area and in districts, and recalls that residents can contact the phone 968466542 to warn of the presence of pests The councilor for Health of the City of Lorca, José Ángel Ponce, has released, this morning, the details of the surveillance and control campaign, which is carried out every year by the Lorca municipality against the tiger mosquito. The mayor of Health has specified that "this year 10 more traps have been placed than last year; in total, 26 double oviposition traps, or what is the same, 52 in different locations in the municipality such as the urban center, and in districts such as La Hoya, Almendricos, Campillo or Ramonete, among others.

For the first time traps have been installed in Zarcilla de Ramos, La Paca, La Parroquia and la Escucia.

" The mayor of Health has detailed that "in the upper districts so far no positive results have been found, although it is probable that the mosquito can colonize these areas, since in fact it is already present in municipalities located north of ours such as Caravaca, Cehegín o Moratalla.

However, if we compare ourselves with the rest of the Region, the positivity in our municipality is one of the lowest, as can be seen in the map of municipalities of the Regional Plan ". José Ángel Ponce explained that "the trap that is placed consists of a cylindrical black plastic container in which a wooden slat is inserted.

The plastic containers are filled with water, leaving a couple of centimeters of the slab without cover, add rabbit feed so that the water has nutrients and thus attract the female mosquito to lay eggs on the slab.

At each sampling point, therefore, 2 traps are arranged with a separation of between 2 and 20 m.

Traps should be placed in the shade, preferably in vegetation and no more than 1.5 m high.

" Ponce Díaz has specified that "the first traps were placed on April 28 and every 15 days the tablets are collected and replaced and the samples are transferred to the laboratory of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia". The results of the different samplings, as well as the participating municipalities, can be consulted on the website prepared for this purpose by those responsible for the Regional Tiger Mosquito Surveillance Plan: https://www.um.es/grzba/Vigilancia_Mosquito_Tigre/. Among the recommendations for the control of the tiger mosquito, it is recommended to eliminate the facilities and objects in which water can accumulate; Cover irrigation drums that collect water with mosquito nets, or change the water in the animal's troughs a couple of times a week; Treat facilities and objects that cannot be removed, dried out, covered or changed frequently with authorized biocides, such as street scuppers that collect water for more than a week. In the private sphere, citizen awareness measures should be increased, for this reason the City Council has distributed leaflets and posters for citizen awareness, in addition, informative talks are offered to neighboring communities or other associative entities and calls for citizen collaboration to detect possible foci and eliminate hatcheries. It should be remembered that the 'aedes albopictus', commonly known as the "tiger mosquito" is a competent vector for the transmission of the chikungunya, dengue and Zika viruses.

The first time it was identified in Europe was in 1979 in Albania and, later, in Italy.

In Spain it was detected for the first time in Catalonia in 2004 and since then it has progressively colonized the Mediterranean coast, reaching the Region of Murcia in 2011 and the municipality of Lorca in 2015.
