IU-Verdes Lorca celebrates the social agreement to reconcile the livestock and residential land uses (22/07/2020)

| And highlights "the strength" of the collective work of the neighbors | Councilor Gloria Martín, recalled that her training has worked for four years for a modification of the General Plan to make industrial-type livestock farms compatible with the preservation of people's health and well-being, the environment and natural resources.

A fight that began with a few dozen neighbors The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martín, today showed the satisfaction of her political training with the agreement reached within the framework of the Dialogue Table launched by the City Council to reconcile residential and livestock land uses through the modification of the General Municipal Planning Plan, to be approved in plenary session on July 27. Martín stressed that this is an unprecedented "social agreement" in Lorca that will allow adjusting the distances between new type II and III pig farms to the urban centers of districts, educational and health centers, boulevards, riverbeds, fountains and springs. In defense of the small rancher, Martín explained that type I farms, associated with family economies, will be left out of the modification of the PGMO, and that the expansions that are necessary will be allowed so that those of any type can adapt to sectoral regulations animal welfare or change of orientation, "as long as the same livestock units are respected". Thinking also of those entrepreneurs who already operate in the range fork between 1,000 and 1,500 meters, the modification of the PGOM contemplates the possibility that they can expand their livestock herd to the limit of type II farms (3,000 heads). For Martín, it is about "establishing balanced parameters that allow the harmonization of different land uses in rural settings, and offering a feasible and positive solution for our municipality." IU-Verdes Lorca has been working for four years for a modification of the General Plan to make industrial-type livestock farms compatible with the preservation of the health and well-being of people, the environment and natural resources.

Also "with the possibilities of diversification of our economy, for which it is necessary to minimize the damages for those other economic activities, be they of an industrial, agricultural or tourist nature, which are called to develop in our towns," explained the councilor. "We believe that this is an important step for which, for the sake of the agreement, we have had to make concessions," acknowledged the mayor, adding that "we know that the representatives of the ranchers have also made theirs, and we appreciate it.

" "We are aware that there are families that are going to continue to be unprotected because their homes are outside rural areas and, at the moment, nothing will prevent macro-feedlots from thousands of cattle from being built next to them, but the important thing is that they have been laying the foundations for a reasoned dialogue and hopefully we can continue working in the future, "he said. In his public appearance, Martín praised "the strength of collective work".

In this sense, he related that when they began to work on this problem, the councilors of IU barely met with a dozen neighbors, almost all from the same family.

"They had the tenacity and the patience to go on weaving networks with other neighbors in disparate places of our municipal district that were going through the same thing.

They joined efforts, obtained support from environmental organizations such as Ecologists in Action, and achieved something that is difficult but not impossible : create social awareness ", he assured.

"Lorca should thank this step to 'Stop feedlots next to the houses', to the federation Spartaria-Tierras Altas de Lorca, and to the platform 'Salvemos el Consejero', who have worked side by side, thinking of everyone, sometimes, in a neighborhood context that has not been easy, "he explained. Martín also wanted to highlight the role of the municipal group of IU-Verdes and, above all, of all its militancy.

"We have been not only a necessary tool, but above all useful, to change what was wrong," he said.

To address this task, the mayor assured that they have followed a work model similar to that used with those affected by the return of earthquake aid: "Much work on the street with the groups and good coordination with the institutional work that we do councilors of IU-Verdes and who has later been supported by the government team, "whom he also thanked" for having dignified politics by complying with an electoral commitment.

" Regarding the role played by the Popular Party in this matter, Martín regretted that, due to "electoral strategies" they were "more occupied in seeking the breakdown of dialogue through lies and manipulations than in facilitating understanding", which "is not typical of a party that has governed in Lorca for twelve years, in any case, invited them to join the agreement, despite their "null contributions to its achievement".
