IU requests the name change of the street Primero de Octubre for that of Jerónimo Angosto (27/07/2020)

| With this, due recognition would be given to this priest and to the Historical Memory Law that prevents the Francoist symbolism | Pedro Sosa, councilor spokesman for Izquierda Unida verde in the city of Lorca, announced this morning one of the requests that he will present in today's plenary session for the month of July, consisting of the rename of a street that violates the Law of Historical Memory. Sosa has pointed out that 16 years ago, at the request of Enrique González, then mayor of IU Lorca, it was unanimously agreed to give the deserved recognition to the parish priest of the Ex-College of San Patricio, who died in those days and who fought so hard for the rehabilitation of the historical and artistic complex of Lorca, giving its name to a street. In 2016, a proposal to put its name to a street in the Virgen de la Huertas was rejected by the municipal technicians, arguing that one already existed in La Hoya and that the mention of Primero de Octubre had no Francoist peculiarity because that was the day in which the residents of the area celebrated a coexistence, despite the fact that in many municipalities streets with the same name have been renamed, as that day refers to a historical event extolled by the Franco dictatorship, specifically the appointment on that day of 1936 by the coup general Francisco Franco as Head of the Government of the rebellious area. However, according to Sosa they have been able to verify that there is no street in La Hoya with the name of Jerónimo Angosto and even if it were, there should be no such inconvenience, since there are streets in our municipality with the same name, such as Juan Carlos I, who repeats himself up to five times, and Sosa suspects that the real reason why this man is not given due recognition is the suspicion that this priest aroused among certain reactionary and ultras circles in Lorca. Therefore, Sosa hopes with this request that justice be done twice, complying with the Historical Memory Law and the plenary agreement of 16 years ago in recognition of the work of Jerónimo Angosto.
