The Zarzadilla de Totana aqueduct enters the heritage red list (28/07/2020)

| 2 of the 23 kilometers of this 18th century construction have been included | It is an ambitious engineering work from the 18th century that is closely linked to Lorca and the irrigation of the entire region of Murcia: the Zarzadilla de Totana aqueduct.

Built between 1773 and 1781, it has a total length of 23 kilometers.

Despite its patrimonial and historical importance, it does not enjoy any legal protection, and from the start of the aqueduct in Zarzadilla up to two kilometers beyond, it needs to be intervened, especially the arches that are in a bad or very bad state, depending on the section.

.

In the intermediate area, next to the Limusa plant, two of the arches are also very deteriorated.

However, the last section, located behind the La Comarca factory, appears to be in good condition. It is currently in a state of total abandonment despite having been approved for restoration in 2006 and being essential for the study of the territory. For this reason, the Zarzadilla de Totana aqueduct has just been included in the Red List of Heritage prepared by the Hispania Nostra association and which includes nearly 800 Spanish monuments that are at risk of disappearing if immediate action is not taken. The aqueduct that concerns us was built between 1773 and 1781 according to the Royal Pragmatics of September 5, 1768, to supply water to various sources in the city center and other areas of Lorca (it is known as "Cañería de Lorca") .

Escofet and Martínez de Lara were two of the architects who worked on this project, costing 1,300,000 reais.

It is part of the municipal water network, being essential to learn about the history of Lorca and the irrigation of the Region of Murcia. The infrastructure has a total length of 23 kilometers and runs almost entirely parallel to the road that connects Lorca with Zarzadilla de Totana.

Its height varies according to the section, with the central ditch divided into two equal channels.

The layout of the aqueduct responds to a simple scheme, based on a row of four semi-circular arches with cutwaters, made up of large ashlars.

It is reinforced on both sides by a slope-shaped buttress.

In its upper part is the water conduction channel divided into two.
