IU-Lorca demands the creation of an affordable rental housing stock in the San Fernando neighborhood (21/09/2020)

Gloria Martín denounced that 51 municipally-owned buildings in this neighborhood have been empty for a year and a half, while in Lorca a rental bubble is being generated and hundreds of families do not have access to affordable housing The councilor for IU-Greens in Lorca, Gloria Martín, has denounced a delay of a year and a half for the City Council and the Autonomous Community to release the homes they own in the San Fernando neighborhood.

Martín recalled that they are 51 municipally owned and 18 autonomous properties that both administrations promised to allocate to the promotion of public housing, but that they remain "empty" since the keys were handed over to the owners of private flats in said slum. Eight months have also passed since the municipal government team announced that it was working on the preparation of the specifications that will govern the process of adjudication and sale of the 51 floors of the City Council as official housing.

However, at this point in the year the draft of these specifications has not even been agreed upon with the municipal opposition groups. Martín assured that there is a strong demand for apartments for rent in the municipality that cannot be covered with the private supply "which is scarce and not very accessible due to its abusive price." In this sense, he explained that up to 250 euros are being asked for the rent of a single room in four-bedroom flats, which for the IU-Verdes councilor is indicative that in Lorca a "bubble of the rental". For this reason, the IU-Verdes councilor demanded that the municipal government team "political will" to "fight against speculation and real estate abuses." A first step would be to create a rental exchange at affordable prices with the houses owned by the City Council in the San Fernando neighborhood, while "they are showing themselves incapable of carrying out their adjudication by buying and selling and, meanwhile, they are not being useful for anyone ".

"There are many families who cannot aspire to be granted a mortgage but they can pay 250 or 300 euros per month for the rent of one of these flats," explained Martín, who recalled that the lack of housing alternatives at reasonable prices is the main cause of the increase in the phenomenon of illegal occupation. Martín regretted that despite the multiple initiatives defended by IU-Verdes in plenary session and that have counted with the majority support of all political groups, "the local government team is not working on the 2020-23 municipal housing plan, nor has it carried out a census of empty houses owned by banks to negotiate social rents, nor has it launched a mediation service or proposed tax credits to encourage owners of empty houses to offer them in the rental real estate market.

" Unhealthy homes Martín described the housing policy in the City Council as "non-existent" and warned that it is one of the most important challenges that the municipality is facing right now.

In that sense, he recalled that according to data from the General Directorate of Public Health of the autonomous community "52.7% of Covid-19 infections occur at home", which for the IU-Verdes councilor is closely related to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions in homes in the urban area of ??Lorca.

"Solutions are not being considered for those people whose lack of social and economic support makes it impossible for them to comply with isolation or quarantine measures," she denounced.

"As long as we do not address the underlying causes of the pandemic related to living conditions in homes,it will be very difficult to stop this, "he concluded.
