The aromatic producers advance in their objective of turning the Highlands of Lorca into a benchmark for the cultivation and transformation of red thyme (22/09/2020)

They have met with the General Director of Food Industry and Agrarian Cooperativism of the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment of the Region of Murcia, José Gómez Ortega, and with the Director of the Murcian Institute for Agrarian Research and Development and Alimentario (IMIDA), Víctor Roberto Serrano, to advance in the achievement of a quality seal, of a transformation center, and in the launch of a research project on varietal improvement of red thyme Members of the board of directors of the Association of producers and transformers of aromatic plants of the Highlands of Lorca, accompanied by the councilor of IU-Verdes, Gloria Martín, have met today in Murcia with the General Director of Food Industry and Agrarian Cooperativism of the Department of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment of the Region of Murcia, José Gómez Ortega, and with the Director of the Murcian Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Development (IMIDA), Víctor Roberto Serrano. The association of producers has described the meeting as "very profitable" on its way towards obtaining the Protected Designation of Origin for the red thyme that is cultivated in the northern towns of Lorca, as well as for setting up a center for transformation of aromatic and medicinal plants that these farmers consider "essential" to fix the young population in this area.

In this sense, these farmers have set themselves the objective of turning the Highlands of Lorca into a benchmark in the production of essential oils, which will constitute an economic and social engine, as well as a backbone for the roots of the population in rural environments. The representatives of this association of producers have given their interlocutors a draft of the dossier for the PDO that is already "very advanced" and includes a Master Plan with the strategic lines and specific objectives that will mark its roadmap.Another of the fundamental points of the meeting was the possibility of establishing an Organization of Fruit and Vegetable Producers (OPFH) in order to access community financial aid to carry out investment projects within the framework of environmental and improvement activities of the production and marketing of its products. The association, which since last June already has a community trade mark, will now request a quality seal from the Ministry of Agriculture, thus ensuring compliance with current regulations on quality. The association has also been summoned to participate in a working meeting with the IMIDA aromatic plants research group in order to develop a project that through R & D & I techniques affects varietal improvement to homogenize production and extract maximum crop yield.
