IU demands an urgent evaluation of telematics education to alleviate its serious deficiencies in Lorca (23/09/2020)

The councilor for this training, Gloria Martín, has warned that almost ten days after the start of the school year, part of the student body cannot connect to virtual classrooms and that there are significant deficits in the care that students with special educational needs should receive.

Martín has denounced that almost ten days after the start of the school year, which, by order of the Regional Government, is being developed electronically until the epidemiological indicators of Covid-19 show a more favorable situation, no evaluation has been made public, when their political training has detected that there is a significant percentage of students who are not being able to connect to the classes taught virtually. The problems have to do with connection failures but, fundamentally, with the lack of information technology that many families suffer.

"There are students who must share a computer with their siblings or who, directly, do not have devices to access education," explained Martín.

The situation is so bizarre, that students who in the first wave of Covid-19 were provided a tablet or a laptop by their educational centers, "now they cannot be given this material because teachers also need them to teach classes ". The councilor of IU-Verdes regretted that in the case of students in the first years of Infant, teaching is limited to sending videos and files that must be done on a "voluntary" basis.

All this without taking into account that it is depriving the students of all the cycles of the socio-emotional part that education implies, which for an important part will suppose a progressive isolation. Martín also denounced serious deficiencies in the attention that students with special educational needs should receive.

"We receive very worrying complaints from mothers and fathers who do not know how to help their sons and daughters who suffer from attention deficit, hyperactivity or autism spectrum disorders," said Martín, who regretted that the lack of foresight and investment in personnel and in media by the Administrations "is multiplying the inequalities between students of different socioeconomic origin or different abilities." The councilor of IU-Verdes assured that "we should not sleep peacefully knowing that in a class of 24 students 16 are connected, because that is not a relative success but a resounding failure to the extent that the right to Education is not being guaranteed of each and every one of the children and adolescents of our municipality ".

"We cannot allow students to be left out of the system and condemn them to a future without opportunities," he added. For this reason, Martín urged the Department of Education to immediately collect the incidents detected in all the educational centers of the municipality and transfer them to Murcia "which, without further delay, must provide families whose children cannot access the kinds of media they need.

" In this regard, the mayor of IU-Verdes has wondered where are the 10,400 tablets for students or the 3,000 monitors with webcam for teachers that the Ministry of Education assured that it would distribute among the students affected by the digital divide.
