The PP proposes to expand the fiber optic network to gradually cover all Lorca, taking advantage of economic aid from the European Union (29/09/2020)

Mari Huertas García: "the European Commission has given Spain 400 million euros for the development of the lines that would allow the development of this service in our districts, and we want the city council to undertake actions to that effect"The Councilor for Citizen Participation in the town hall of Lorca for the Popular Party, Mari Huertas García, has proposed that the municipal council undertake the negotiations, procedures and search for the necessary financing both with service providers and with public administrations with the aim of expand the internet network so that it progressively reaches all our neighborhoods and districts.

Only in some streets of certain districts there is this service, something very insufficient.Mari Huertas García explained that the coronavirus crisis is causing deep and very rapid changes in our society.

The world has changed and it will be the municipalities that best adapt to the new circumstances that offer their citizens better conditions for development.

In the specific case of Covid-19, the need to maintain social distancing has brought with it the launch of teleworking and distance training.

The latter includes the holding of classes in case the conditions of the pandemic so requireThis situation has shown the urgent need for us to work from municipalism to reduce the digital divide, which is particularly noticeable in the case of our districts.

With the development of an internet network that offers the maximum possibilities to its users, we have the opportunity to take advantage of the opportunities of the globalization process, enjoying the quality of life that living in municipalities offers us that do not suffer from the inconveniences of overcrowding. The most recent social studies carried out at the national level confirm that 6 out of 10 people residing in large cities are willing to move their place of residence to live in towns and / or districts, having as the main condition at the time of a definitive transfer that these enclaves have a fast and guaranteed internet access network.

We are talking about a key tool to reverse the depopulation process that is taking place in many areas, including some in our own municipality.

From the Popular Party we are fully committed to this task, and we propose thatWe are aware that the general criteria followed by these companies to expand their networks is determined by the economic interest in incorporating new clients.

We believe that the city council has to get involved and work now more than ever to take advantage of the current situation, in which families want to live in less populated places, and the EU puts on the table large-scale financial aid to enable quality internet connections and guarantees.

We must remember that the government of Spain has received this year 400 million euros from the European Union to deploy fiber optics capable of supplying up to 300 megabytes of navigationMari Huertas García has stated that the European Digital Agenda marks 2020 as the maximum term to guarantee 30 Mbps to the entire population.

Along these lines, the European Commission approved a few months ago the delivery of 400 million euros for the deployment of very high-speed broadband networks in Spain.

The idea of ??these grants is to benefit consumers and companies in areas of Spain with insufficient connectivity, and the objective is that people can fully benefit from the potential of digital growth, regardless of where they are.

This measure will address the digital divide between urban and rural areas. From the Popular Party we propose that Lorca benefit from the EU policy in this regard, which supports and promotes the use of public funds for very high-speed internet services for homes and companies in areas where private investment is insufficient, as is the case in several areas of our municipality. These actions belong to the Multi-regional Operational Program of Spain ERDF, which includes as an investment priority the expansion of the implementation of broadband and the dissemination of high-speed networks and support for the adoption of emerging technologies and networks for the digital economy, promoting the deployment and adoption of networks and services to guarantee digital connectivity, with the extension of next-generation broadband as a priority.By promoting the connectivity of the population through broadband services, these aids contribute, on the one hand, to reducing the digital gender gap in rural areas and, on the other hand, to face the demographic challenge by promoting new economic activities.

, capable of attracting and maintaining inhabitants in depopulated areas.

Likewise, they promote sustainable development by favoring the telematic completion of procedures in an accessible way and avoiding travel, which results in greater efficiency and technological savings. There are many citizens left to take the fiber to, especially in areas where private firms do not pay to invest.

It is here when the intervention of the city council is needed to find solutions that stimulate private investment.

The 400 million euros will be used to deploy fiber between 2020 and 2022 to have networks capable of providing upload and download speeds of 300 megabits per second (Mbps), expandable to 1 gigabit (Gbps).

The new networks would cover areas in which high-speed networks that offer download speeds of at least 30 Mbps are not present or planned.

They should also serve to cover areas where a high-speed network is already present or planned in the near future.

speed, but in which there is no network that allows a download of more than 100 Mbps.
