IU: The regional government discriminates against Lorca in the removal of asbestos from public schools (29/09/2020)

The councilor of this formation, Gloria Martín, has regretted that the regional executive of PP and C's has not even delegated the powers to the City of Lorca for this action, while those of Murcia and Cartagena have already been assigned 3.3 million euros to replace the roofs of educational centers that contain fiber cement The councilor for Izquierda Unida-Verdes in Lorca, Gloria Martín, has denounced the discrimination suffered by Lorca regarding the investments of the autonomous community to remove and replace the asbestos covers of the public educational centers of the municipality. Martín alluded to the announcement made by the regional government spokesperson, Ana Martínez (C's), about the transfer of 1.8 million euros to the Murcia city council to remove this toxic and carcinogenic material from 20 schools, and from another 1.5 million to Cartagena for another ten centers. Last June, the IU-Verdes councilor already warned that the regional executive of PP and C's, by decree, had delegated powers to both consistories in order for the local corporations to carry out these actions.

However, it has not done the same with the city of Lorca, nor have funds been transferred to the Ciudad del Sol to replace the 6,000 m2 of materials that contain asbestos on the roofs, rain gutters and downspouts of the Petra González schools (La Paca), Almendricos, Zarcilla de Ramos, Villaespesa (Tercia), Casa del Niño, Pasico Campillo, Alfonso García López (Purias) and Zarzadilla de Totana. Then, Gloria Martín asked "more forcefulness" to the municipal government team so that the Ministry of Education does not relegate Lorca in the Plan for Energy Efficiency and Bioclimatic Reconversion.

In this regard, the councilor of IU-Verdes regretted the limited capacity to claim the City Council of Lorca in the face of the "discriminatory" and "centralist" attitude of a regional government "to whom the health and safety of schoolchildren in our municipality seems to care little ". Martín announced that his political formation will send a letter to the addresses and to the AMPAS of the affected Lorca educational centers so that they have all the information in this regard and can claim "equal treatment" with respect to that received by Murcia and Cartagena.
