The City Council of Lorca carries out a shock treatment against the red weevil in the Purias roundabout despite being a highway of autonomic competence (29/09/2020)

The Councilor for Parks and Gardens, Antonio Navarro, added that "this area in which drivers were having many visibility problems has also been cleaned up" and has asked the Autonomous Community to review other specimens that may be in similar conditions . The Councilor for Parks and Gardens of the Lorca City Council, Antonio Navarro, has reported on the work that is being carried out from this management area in recent days for the treatment of sick palm trees in our municipality. The Councilor for Parks and Gardens has specified that "the staff of this council is attending to these palm trees affected by the weevil located in the Purias roundabout, despite being a direct competence of the Autonomous Community" which has requested "a effort to control these pests in particular of this type of insect that affects the entire crown, subsequently causing the death of the palm tree ". Antonio Navarro explained that "we had to apply a shock treatment to try to save them, before having to remove them and also to clean up this roundabout with the cleaning of branches and leaves, since the drivers who travel along this regional highway, in specifically the RM-621, known as the old Águilas highway and whose maintenance corresponds to the Autonomous Community, they were having visibility problems ". Navarro Pérez recalled that "the red weevil feeds on the interior of palm trees, preferably those that have wounds - whether accidental or caused by pruning, and it is not always easy to detect their presence until it has caused serious damage to the specimens, when it runs out of food and goes outside, so it is essential to carry out prevention work and protect as many palm trees as possible, checking exactly the level of severity of the pest and the level of development at which it is found, since the red palm weevil flies in search of healthy palm trees, and the pest can easily spread to other nearby palm trees.

" Although this insect can affect various species of palm trees, in Mediterranean regions it has a preference for the Canary Island palm (Phoenix canariensis) and the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera).
