IU-Verdes Lorca asks not to focus on day laborers but on companies that do not protect them against Covid-19 (02/10/2020)

The councilor for this training, Gloria Martín, also recalled that 54.3% of infections of known origin in Lorca occur at home and has suggested solutions that guarantee proper isolation for people who suffer from overcrowding in their homes The councilor for Izquierda Unida-Verdes in the Lorca City Council, Gloria Martín, today pointed to housing as a "structural cause of the greatest exposure to contagion of the Covid-19 virus.

Martín has pointed out that according to the latest weekly report of the Epidemiology Service of the General Directorate of Public Health of the Autonomous Community, among the infections that have a known origin in Lorca, "54.3% occur at home", followed of those linked to work (27.2%) and those associated with leisure (16.4%). Martín explained that the virus does not treat all social classes the same, while statistics reveal that it mistreats more poor neighborhoods "where we know there are problems of overcrowding in homes." In this sense, the IU-Verdes councilor has opined that the contagion of the virus does not depend solely on the individual behavior of each person, and that it is useless for the health authorities to insist on isolation measures "if in many cases they are not given the conditions to be able to fulfill it ". "How can people who live with their family in a room in a shared apartment put themselves in isolation?" Asked Martín, who has assured that the epidemiological problem of Lorca is not "a cultural issue", but fundamentally of " suitability of many homes ", so providing solutions in this regard will be key to tackling it. In the short term, and to help stop the infections, the IU-Verdes councilor has asked the regional health authorities to enable one of the hotels in the city to accommodate residents who must remain in isolation when the conditions of their habitual residence does not allow guaranteeing compliance with this measure. In the medium-long term, Martín has also asked the Administrations to implement public policies that end overcrowding in homes, which would be a structural and permanent solution. In the workplace, the IU-Verdes councilor has assured that "we cannot deny people the right to earn a living", and that, furthermore, "society cannot do without workers in essential activities, such as farmers , caretakers or carriers ", who cannot exercise their trade electronically.

"What we can do for these workers is to be inflexible with companies, especially those of temporary work, which are obliged to provide them with individual protective equipment, safe means of transport, to carry out the corresponding diagnostic tests and to have them hired." "If these people cannot enjoy a medical leave and thus guarantee the sustenance of their families, they will hardly give up going to their job, worried because theirs have to eat.

"" It is not a problem of day laborers, but of companies that do not guarantee labor rights, "said Martín, who assured that" that is where the focus of vigilance and action should be placed.
