IU Lorca warns of abuses by banks to applicants for the Minimum Vital Income (08/10/2020)

Gloria Martín has denounced that some entities are opening common current accounts to applicants for this benefit, which forces them to pay up to 240 euros per year in commissions, without offering them the possibility of availing themselves of a basic payment account, which has a commission of three euros per month.

In any case, this training is in favor of the bank account not being a requirement for the IMV application until its concession is approved. The Municipal Group of Izquierda Unida-Verdes in the City Council of Lorca has denounced the "obstacles" and "abuses" suffered by applicants from Lorca for the Minimum Vital Income (IMV) who are forced to open bank accounts "even without being certain of that the benefit will be granted ".Martín has reported that although banks can offer so-called "basic payment accounts", aimed at people in vulnerable situations and that generate a monthly commission of three euros, some entities are proceeding to open common checking accounts, affected by a new commission policy, which, from October 1, obliges residents to face a cost of up to 240 euros per year, 60 euros per quarter, for maintenance.Gloria Martín explained that some of the neighbors who are being advised in the Municipal Group of Izquierda Unida-Verdes for the processing of the IMV, have already spent more than forty euros in bank commissions "when they have not yet seen a cent of the benefit, They don't even know if they're going to see it.

" For Martín, "we are talking about families that turn to the IMV to be able to face their most basic needs and it does not make sense that when they do not yet have this help, the banks are already obtaining benefits from this social measure." "It cannot be that the first to do business with this are the banks, when it comes to a measure aimed at people affected by extreme poverty," he said.In line, the councilor has reported that the unavailability of a bank account is a more common situation than it seems.

Although Izquierda Unida-Verdes Lorca is in favor of not being a requirement for the IMV application until its concession is approved, "at least, banks should be required not to engage in these abusive and unethical practices, to be fattened about families that barely have to survive, "said Martín.For this reason, he has asked the Mayor of Lorca, as other city councils in the country have done, "to contact the banking entities based in Lorca to urge them to facilitate the opening of these basic payment accounts to people in situations of special vulnerability" .Martín, who reported that the Municipal Group of Izquierda Unida-Verdes have already advised 150 neighbors in the IMV process, said that the measure is "positive" because it will improve the economic situation of families mired in extreme poverty and minimize the risk of social exclusion, although he acknowledged that both its processing and the conditions for its concession "can be improved".

In this sense, he trusted that with the legislative change approved last September, the processing of applications will be accelerated and the IMV will be a really useful tool that allows those who need it to "be able to live with dignity."
