Lorca joins the commemoration of the European Day of Rock Art together with other municipalities in the Region of Murcia (09/10/2020)

| For this reason, a banner of this celebration will be displayed on the balcony of the Lorca City Council, which in turn promotes giving visibility to this event | The Lorca City Council has joined the celebration of the European Day of Rock Art, which is commemorated this Friday, October 9. The mayor of Lorca stressed that "the municipality of Lorca is one of the 11 in the Region of Murcia that is fortunate enough to house prehistoric cave paintings, declared World Heritage by UNESCO" and recalled that "the Council of Europe, aware of the immense cultural value of these places, has instituted October 9 as European Rock Art Day, promoting the celebration and visibility of the event ". In this way, the First mayor has indicated that "the municipality of Lorca joins others in the Murcia Region such as Yecla, Jumilla, Cieza, Abarán, Calasparra, Moratalla, Caravaca, Cehegín, Mula, and Cartagena for this commemoration with this simple initiative, promoted by the Federation of Municipalities, the University of Murcia and the Friends of Rock Art association, which seeks to make our rich heritage visible and the fact that we, like other European regions, have the privilege of being part of that Rock Territory ". Diego José Mateos has highlighted that "in Lorca we are fortunate to have several stations with cave paintings that allow us to be part of that select club of municipalities with these types of places, considered World Heritage of Humanity, now more than 20 years.

Among the cave paintings found in the municipality of Lorca we can highlight those of the 'Mojao' shelter, located in the Valdeinfierno area, where the figure of a hunter with a bow stands out, which is the distinctive of the Association of Friends of Archaeological Museum of Lorca, in addition to other paintings such as those of Tío Labrador, Los Paradores, Los Gavilanes, La Esperilla, Las Cobaticas I and II, and the Barranco de la Hoz ". Finally, Mateos explained that "for this edition the participating municipalities will upload images of this initiative to a Council of Europe website to publicize the municipality, including Lorca, as well as its inclusion in this select group of landscapes with rock art ".
