Institutional statement on the occasion of October 12, Day of the National Holiday of Spain (12/10/2020)

All municipal groups with representation in the City Council have agreed on this text, which highlights that "today more than ever, we show our deep pride in belonging to a project of people founded on plurality and common heritage." On October 12, the National Holiday of Spain, the Spaniards and the entire Ibero-American community also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Day.

Today, more than ever, we show our deep pride in belonging to a project of people founded on plurality and common heritage. The concept of Hispanidad has been formed as an integrating process that arises and feeds off the fusion of two worlds that discover and enrich each other, with the Spanish language being the unifying cultural engine of more than 400 million people of different peoples and races . The concept of Hispanidad transcends the borders of the Iberian Peninsula to achieve the universal and give its own personality and stamp to an entire international community that has its common identity in Hispanic America. With their mutual discovery, a new era was opened in which solid foundations were laid for social, scientific, economic and cultural development that materialized after the first circumnavigation of the globe 500 years ago.

Both milestones, the knowledge of the American continent and the first round the world, were Spanish companies that contributed to shape the concept of Hispanidad. The Spanish cultural heritage must serve as a lever for peaceful and harmonious coexistence between the different peoples that make up the Ibero-American community and whose main integrating factor is the language of Cervantes. For all these reasons, the city of Lorca is proud to be part of a common, plural and universal identity and congratulates all Spaniards and members of the Ibero-American community on this holiday, demanding solidarity, justice, equality and social and economic progress of all peoples and nations, prioritizing respect for Human Rights and the formation of more advanced democratic societies as guarantors of the free coexistence of all of them.
