The City Council of Lorca commemorates the International Day of Rural Women highlighting the important role that this group plays in Society (15/10/2020)

The mayor of Equality, Antonia Pérez, stressed that "this year this celebration acquires a special importance, since, due to the current pandemic, the primary sector has been recognized as essential and thanks to it we have been able to cover our basic needs during the tougher stages of confinement in months past.

" The City Council of Lorca has joined, this Thursday, October 15, to commemorate the 'International Day of Rural Women' and that this year due to the health situation it will not be able to carry out its traditional celebration. The Councilor for Equality of the City Council of Lorca, Antonia Pérez, recalled that "the United Nations agreed to the annual celebration of the International Rural Women, every October 15, a commemoration in which all, men and women, are called to reflect and vindicate the fundamental role that women have in rural areas ". Antonia Pérez stressed that "every year, at this date, we pay attention to these women, but in this edition, due to the current pandemic situation, the primary sector has been recognized as essential and thanks to it we have been able to cover our basic needs during the toughest stages of confinement we had to face months past.

" The mayor of Equality has reiterated that "among the people who have been there, developing essential work, are rural women, who thanks to their dedication and commitment have shown us, once again, how much they are necessary to us all and to all, among other things, to make our existence easier.

" The municipal responsible for Equality has stressed that "the contribution of rural women is always shown to be invaluable and essential, and is the main engine for a large part of rural society to continue alive, since without their presence the environment is lost.

They have known adapt to new realities, and they are very diverse, developing traditional roles and opening your horizons to other goals ". The councilor explained that "this year the activities, on the occasion of the pandemic, have focused on the Internet with the dissemination of a commemorative poster that shows real images of rural women in our municipality, which we will also send to the different groups of women , helping us with social networks and WhatsApp, as well as messages on radio, television and written press ". In addition, we will join the celebration that will be held on this day from the Federation of Rural Women's Associations (FADEMUR), which will consist of the largest online meeting of rural women with a new format, specifically, a television program that will be broadcast live and will feature voices from different countries and institutions, through the portal www.fademur.es. Finally, Antonia Pérez has insisted that "from the Town Hall we will be at the side of women's groups, as we have always done, because it is time to claim, once again, and if possible with more determination, the role of rural women and Thank you for being there.

During the most critical days we would go out to our balconies to applaud the health personnel, and we must make these applause to them, because they had and have a fundamental social role, which benefits the entire Society ". For her part, Pilar Fernández, president of the FOML recalled that "this day, in addition to the celebration, cannot lose its vindictive character for equal opportunities for women, including those who live in rural areas, more than 16,000 of them they do in our municipality, so that they can improve their quality of life and have full professional development ".
