The municipality of Lorca currently has 97,003 inhabitants, of which 51.3 percent are men and 48.7 women (20/10/2020)

The mayor of Statistics has specified that "63,009 people reside in the urban area, which is 65 percent of the total, while 35 percent of the remaining population lives in the different districts of our municipal term." The Councilor for Statistics of the City Council of Lorca, Isidro Abellán, has released some of the most relevant data from the municipal register on October 19, coinciding with the celebration, this Tuesday, October 20, of the third International Statistics Day. Isidro Abellán recalled that "the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) decided to celebrate this day every 5 years.

It was celebrated in 2010, 2015 and it does so in 2020 for the third time, and this time under the slogan 'Connecting the world with data we can trust ', reflecting the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the public good in national statistical systems.

" Regarding the data on the population of the municipality of Lorca, the mayor of Statistics has detailed that "in the municipality of Lorca currently 97,003 inhabitants reside, of which 49,806, 51.3 percent, are men and 47,197, 48 7 percent are women.

" Abellán has specified that "63,009 people reside in the urban area, which is 65 percent of the total, while 35 percent of the remaining population lives in the different districts of our municipal term." In reference to the division by age, the municipal register reflects that 22.76 percent of the population is under 20 years of age, while 15.14 percent is over 65 years old, with the block of people of active age constituting one percentage higher than 62.1 percent.

In the urban area, a younger population is observed, with 23.8 percent of those under 20 years of age and 12.6 of those over 65 years of age, while in the districts, the number of older people increases considerably to almost 20 percent and those under 20 years of age drop to 20.8 percent ". On the multiculturalism of the Lorca municipality, the data show that "in Lorca a total of 96 different nationalities are concentrated.

Of which 22.1 percent of the population are different from the Spanish, the Moroccan being the most numerous, with 10,826 citizens what They represent 11.2 percent of the total, 2,869 people are of Ecuadorian nationality, 3 percent of the total.

Much further away are citizens from Romania, being 1.3 percent of the population; Nicaraguans with 1 percent, or Ghanaians with 0.7.

Other nationalities highlighted by the number of citizens are Hondurans, British, Bolivians, Bulgarians or Colombians.

Furthermore, of the total foreign population, 58 percent are men and 42 percent are women.

" Regarding the management of the Municipal Register of Inhabitants, a document that constitutes full proof of the residence of the inhabitants of a municipality, the Councilor for Statistics has indicated that "during 2020, and taking into account that we are in mid-October and that had two months of state of alarm with suspension of attention to the public, more than 27,651 certificates and registration flyers have been issued, which means an average of more than 3,450 monthly documents (discounting the two months of the state of alarm) ". In addition, about 3,500 registrations have been processed in the Register of which 18.7 percent have been due to birth and 67.3 due to change of residence.

On the other hand, 2,440 cancellations have been applied, of which 1,208 have been due to change of residence and 519 due to death, the rest, 29.2 percent, corresponding to administrative cancellations, due to expiration of registration or non-confirmation of residence, as a consequence of the unsuccessful completion of the processing of some 1,800 ex officio termination files and some 600 termination due to expiration, these affecting mostly foreign citizens ". Isidro Abellán added that "other types of steps have been taken with respect to the Population Register, up to a total of 9,600 of which 3,900 have referred to changes of address within the municipality and 2,200 to administrative changes in relation to assignments of numbering of houses, names of roads or geographical updates of the territory or the gazetteer.

More than 1,700 steps have been taken in relation to the obligation to renew or confirm the register of foreigners residing in Spain, the rest, about 1,800, have been due to the update of school titles, identity documents or changes of nationality, as well as corrections of personal data ". Finally, the Councilor for Statistics has wanted to take advantage of this commemoration of the International Statistics Day to influence the need to raise awareness in society of the importance of statistical data to better understand matters such as employment, health (without going further We are verifying it far from the daily data on infections and deaths from coronavirus), or the population, as well as the work carried out by statistical professionals every day.
