We are Lorca: "For a green Lorca" (24/10/2020)

Already in the 20th century, green belts were conceptualized as a type of soil in urban planning.

Its objective is to conserve areas of vegetation around urban centers.

These plots are intended to protect natural environments by generating a network of contiguous habitats for wildlife; improve the quality of air, water and land use in metropolitan areas and ensure that citizens have access to the countryside, with the consequent educational and recreational opportunities while also avoiding rural depopulation.

Progress should be made in an important aspect of creating forest mass for the sustainable development of cities in the 21st century: the so-called urban green corridors. The tree-lined walks, the rivers in its urban sections or the use of infrastructure networks serve to incorporate biodiversity from the periphery to the center of cities, specifically Lorca has a high deficiency of forest mass, which according to the European Environmental Agency, only has one third of the peripheral vegetation recommended for a healthy environment.

For this reason, we believe that in urban projects, they should be coupled with projects to increase the forest mass and we have a good opportunity in the "project to restore the Molino del Escarambrujo", in a district of Rio, which could include a tree-lined path for bicycles and pedestrians that increase the peripheral green areas and leisure and sports areas so extremely deficient in our city.If these actions were controlled, it could also be taken as the start of the Lorca-Caravaca de la Cruz jubilee path (but now that Caravaca is preparing the Jubilee year), and it would substantially increase the interest of Lorca as a growing ecological tourism, It would undoubtedly benefit Lorca and its upper districts of Parroquia, Zarcilla de Ramos, Avilés, Coy, Culebrina, Doña Inés, La Paca, and Zarzadilla de Totana.

Likewise, it could be the beginning of the arrangement of the despised ecosystem of the Luchena River, the only river in Lorca with permanent water every day of the year with great potential from the environmental and tourist aspects.Let us remember that the execution of the works has not started yet, and that the restoration of the "Molino Escarambrujo" property, meets its execution date in December 2020, entailing serious risks of collapse. We are the Lorca Region firmly committed to ecology and we claim once again, the railroad detour from Lorca with a new station on the outskirts of the City, (parallel to the highway) that would open a golden opportunity for a green corridor or greenway throughout the center of the city, from one end to the other, among many other benefits of environmental relief and sustainability, providing Lorca with a wooded lung and a pedestrian corridor. We also believe that the execution of the works could be assigned to self-employed workers from Lorquinos, who are experiencing the worst job crisis.Antonio Segura Miras (ecology area)
