The City Council of Lorca carries out prevention and control of legionellosis in the schools of the municipality (03/11/2020)

José Ángel Ponce: "The Department of Health is in charge of the hygienic sanitary maintenance of the 38 public and subsidized schools in our municipality as well as 65 ornamental fountains, 8 sports facilities and the 4 municipal shelters". The Councilor for Health of the City of Lorca, José Ángel Ponce, has reported on the prevention and control of legionellosis in the schools of the municipality. Ponce explained that "in accordance with Royal Decree 865/2003 which establishes the hygienic-sanitary criteria for the prevention and control of legionellosis, from the Lorca City Council, through the Department of Health, we maintain an exhaustive control of the system supply of all those municipal facilities that use water in their operation, produce aerosols and are located in open areas for collective use and may be susceptible to become sources of spread of this disease.

" The mayor has detailed that "the works carried out in the schools are, on an annual basis, the cleaning and disinfection of the water tanks and the analysis of Legionella levels and, on a monthly basis, the review of the state of conservation and cleaning of terminal points and accumulator tanks as well as checking the water temperature and the chlorine and PH levels ". Ponce Díaz has indicated that "cleaning and disinfection is carried out before the beginning of the school year during the last weeks of August or first of September and the sample collection for analysis of legionella pneumophila is carried out 15 days after the cleaning and disinfection of the facility.

And, in all centers, the treatment carried out is recorded by means of the corresponding certificate that is included in the center's maintenance book ". The Councilor for Health has revealed that "specifically, the Department of Health is in charge of the hygienic sanitary maintenance of the 38 public and subsidized schools in our municipality as well as 65 ornamental fountains, 8 sports facilities and the 4 municipal shelters.

In addition In the case of the Pilar Soubrier School of Special Education, as it is the only one that has a residence and therefore uses a domestic hot water system, we go one step further and carry out a daily control due, in addition, to the special sensitivity of residents ". José Ángel Ponce recalled that "legionellosis is a bacterial disease commonly present in surface waters of lakes, rivers or ponds but that it does not cause contagion when drinking it, on the other hand, it can be contracted due to inadequate maintenance of distribution networks of water whose end is the installation of an aerosol-producing mechanism since the bacterium is dispersed through the air, through the small drops of water that can remain suspended and penetrate the respiratory system by inhalation ".
