The City Council of Lorca requests the Directorate of Cultural Assets of CARM for a direct subsidy that allows the musealization and enhancement of the Palace of Guevara (04/11/2020)

The mayor of Culture, María Ángeles Mazuecos, explained that the "objective of this project included in the Master Plan for the Recovery of the Cultural Heritage of Lorca, is to define the minimum actions that allow the use of this property as an exhibition space, taking into account the building's own idiosyncrasy, its constructive history, as well as the latest interventions ". The Councilor for Culture of the City Council of Lorca, María Ángeles Mazuecos, has announced that the City Council has requested a direct subsidy from the General Directorate of Cultural Assets of the CARM for the musealization and enhancement of the Palace of Guevara de Lorca, The mayor of Culture has detailed that "this subsidy amounts to 392,879,096 euros for the execution of the works consisting of the musealization of the Guevara de Lorca Palace, an action included in the Master Plan for the Recovery of the Cultural Heritage of Lorca after the damage caused by the May 2011 earthquakes at the expense of the European Investment Bank (EIB) ". María Ángeles Mazuecos explained that "the objective of this project is none other than to define the appropriate actions that allow the use of the Guevara Palace as an exhibition space.

For this we have proposed a series of previous conditions, as a program of needs , taking into account the palace's own idiosyncrasy, its constructive history, as well as the latest interventions ". Among others, the project includes the new cataloging and verification of the inventory; building security; lighting situation; protection of ceramic floors; exhibition of pieces; uniform signage; conditioning of the service area; Fire and evacuation plan; accessibility; maintenance and conservation actions and other actions in the elevator ". Mazuecos Moreno has specified that "this project allows the musealisation of this property as well and the collection of movable property to be exhibited has been taken into account, the permanent or temporary nature of the exhibitions, depending on whether they are located on the ground floor for exhibitions and temporary activities, noble floor for permanent exhibition, attic floor for warehouses, restoration workshops, archives and annexes ". The person in charge of Culture has also referred to the current sector regulations (security, anti-intrusion, accessibility, etc.) that have also been taken into account, as well as the economic possibilities of the promoter (possibility of carrying out the works in phases or independent units, financing possibilities, possibility of alternating the works with possible visits, among others) ". Mazuecos recalled that "a few weeks ago, the City Council, through the Department of Culture and Local Development, completed actions inside the Guevara Palace to improve accessibility, with the installation of new access ramps and the waterproofing of the side patio, which overlooks the Plaza de la Bordadora to avoid damp caused by the lack of slope of the pavement so that the rainwater flowed next to the wall of the facade, as well as the construction of new toilets adapted to people with reduced mobility". The councilor stressed that "these works complement the restoration work on the main façade, from where the scaffolding was removed a few weeks ago after a municipal investment of € 38,633.88 to reverse the damage that previous actions carried out over the last 30 years had caused.

According to technical reports, the cement mortars used, up to four layers of mortars, as well as the non-breathable, waterproof and highly hard surface paints, had increased these damages due to sulphation, salt crystallization and disintegration of the stone.

". Finally, the Councilor for Culture has insisted that "once the health situation allows us, these agencies will open their doors so that Lorca and visitors can enjoy the greatness of this property and the restored facade of the Palace" . The Palace of Guevara is the most significant building of all the civil Baroque in Lorca.

The façade consists of two bodies, the lower part has Solomonic columns, abundant decoration with plant motifs, fruits and satyrs.

The second body shows the representation of the family heraldry and, in the upper part, the coat of arms of the Order of Santiago.

The patio is made up of arches on Macael marble columns decorated with plant motifs, children's heads and shields.
