The results of the measurements show that the awnings installed in the historic center of the 'Life Adaptate' project allow lowering the soil temperature between 10 ° C and 15 ° C (09/11/2020)

From the City Council of Lorca a survey is launched to find out the opinion of the neighbors about this shading system, about the importance of climate change; the risks that this has for the municipality of Lorca; as well as the need for increased efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Councilor for the Environment of the Lorca City Council, José Luis Ruiz Guillén, reported, this morning, the results of the measurements carried out to know the impact of the shade provided by the awnings on Corredera street and adjacent streets, within the LIFE Adaptate project ". The Councilor for the Environment has detailed that "the difference in temperature between sensors installed in a sunny area and another in shade has given us an average reduction value of 5 ° C.

During days with maximum temperatures above 40 ° C , the impact of the awnings has been measured by means of sensors installed in a sunny area and in the shade of the awnings, observing a reduction of up to 9 ° C in the ambient temperature ". José Luis Ruiz Guillén has highlighted that "according to the data obtained from the measurements made in probes placed under the ground, in a sunny area and in another protected from the sun by awnings to know the temperature reached, we can see how it has been exceeded at some point a difference of 20 ° C between the soil that has received sun and the one that has not.

The decrease in average temperature in the soil between the sunny area and the area protected from the sun has been between 10 or 15 ° C ". In addition, this drop in temperature and thermal sensation not only occurs in the hours of sunshine, but also once the sun has gone as the ground is cooler, the sensation of pedestrians has been much less.

Benefits that have been verified both in the data obtained in the measurements carried out and in the surveys carried out the previous year and by the comments received by the pedestrians who walk through these streets as well as by merchants and hoteliers of these who have sent us the satisfactory They consider the project and the good acceptance it has had. And to continue collecting the opinion of citizens, which we consider essential, a survey has been launched so that all citizens can give their opinion on the importance of climate change; the risks it has for the municipality of Lorca; the need for increased efforts to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions; and new habits at home to reduce individual impact on climate change. The Councilor for the Environment has specified that "the intention of the questionnaires, which can be found in the news section of the municipal portal www.lorca.es, (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/ 1FAIpQLSc3c0oPYqmlz5QjlPp_FUe5NOR_F9s2PLc9IhfkZlVz7esWmQ / viewform).

adaptation to climate change that is included in the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PACES), tested in the municipal plenary session and that could be extended to other areas of the urban area, either with awnings or through any other element that can be integrated in the city, even more so knowing that the results obtained are positive, and many cities have resorted to the placement of awnings but none of them have measured their effects as we have done from the Lorca City Council ". Ruiz has specified that "the results of this survey, whose individual responses are completely anonymous, will be made public through the communication channels of the project.

Vinyls have also been installed in shops in the urban area to attract the attention of buyers and that they can access the survey through their mobile phone and thus complete this phase of the project that seeks to promote the participation of European municipalities in the PACES initiative, and that is what we are doing from the City Council, we are promoting the inclusion of the objectives of adaptation and mitigation of climate change in municipal policies, thus providing a comprehensive approach to combat climate change within existing action plans ". The LIFE Adaptate project is being implemented in three countries of the European Union: Spain, Portugal and Latvia, and the City Council is one of the project partners and has applied climate adaptation measures in Lorca.

The objective of this project and the installation of these awnings is to reduce the effects of the urban heat that we suffer in Lorca as a result of high temperatures, in addition to helping to promote shopping and for people to enjoy the urban area, with these new areas of shading. Finally, Ruiz Guillén has appealed to the residents of Lorca, especially those in the urban area, to participate in this survey, which will only take a few minutes and can help us improve the results, and mitigate the individual impact of climate change.
