Defense of the natural enclave of Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre (12/11/2020)

| Manifesto of support, recognition and gratitude for the defense of the natural enclave of Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre | The Cabo de Cope and Puntas de Calnegre Park that we all know was declared a Natural Regional Park on July 30, 1992, due to its peculiar landscape beauty and diversity of habitats, flora and fauna.

It should be remembered that it has species of great interest such as the Moorish Tortoise, the Running Toad, the Red-tailed Lizard, as well as the Lost Eagle, the Eagle Owl and much more It is also worth mentioning that the mountainous system as a whole is declared as a zone of special protection of birds (ZEPA) and a place of community importance (SCI).

This natural space is unique, and of key importance for the development of plant and animal life in the wild, due to its peculiar geomorphology of difficult transit. Unfortunately, the Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre Regional Park has been the focus of different exploitation projects and objectives of urban and natural speculation; two of them of singular environmental alarm.

I'm talking about the Cabo Cope Nuclear Central Project (1974) that thanks to the media collaboration of actor Paco Rabal, with the help of Pr.

Pedro Guerrero, the support of Lola Flores and Carmen Sevilla, a social movement was created against the project, which It is categorized as the first ecological movement in Spain in times of the dictatorship.

Likewise, in 2004 there is the Cope Marina Urbanization Project that was the object of urban speculation, being subjected to a state of vulnerability. We cannot forget that in Valcárcel's time the intention was to carry out a construction project for 9,000 homes, hotels and golf courses that would have meant the end of this highly ecological space. As is known, Cabo Cope was owned by Caja Madrid and as a result of the financial crisis of 2008, it was absorbed by Bankia, which proposes the sale of Cabo Cope through the creation of Banco Malo. If a series of legal proceedings were initiated due to the intervention of the Iberdrola electricity company together with other owners (Asociación Air Marina de Cope) and inmobiliaria SAU, which on January 25, 2019 the issue was settled in a judgment not favorable to the resources raised and to the urban plans of the Town Halls of Lorca, Águilas and the RM Autonomous Community on the land of the Calnegre-Cabo Cope coastal-coastal Regional Park. The Ecological Platform (ANSE), after unsuccessful negotiations, with the City Council of Águilas and the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, seizes the land with the financial support of the NGO-WWF worth € 500,000 of the entire mountainous promontory that has 270 hectares.

Fortunately, the Supreme Court dated October 21, 2020 definitively shields the Regional Park. From Somos Lorca Region we thank all the groups, associations, entities, social movements and others involved that have made this reality possible in defense of nature, and of course we also thank the Superior Court of Justice RM (TSJRM) and to the Supreme Court (TS) for the rulings favorable to this natural enclave of Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre, a unique space, which belongs to all Spaniards, Murcians, Lorca and Aquilians we have the honor, privilege and responsibility to care for it protect it ANTONIO SEGURA MIRAS (Head of Ecology at Somos Lorca)
