Lorca fills up with illegal dumps (18/11/2020)

| IU denounces the passivity of the local government and demands control, sanction and regenerative actions | Sosa demands the cleaning of garbage and debris, environmental restoration and the planting of gallery trees in the peri-urban section of the Guadalentín River between La Peñica and Cejo de los EnamoradosThe Municipal Spokesman of IU-V, Pedro Sosa, has summoned the media this morning in the Council Hall of the City Council, equipped with a large panel of photographs taken in various locations in the municipality of Lorca and in which there is no No kind of doubt the proliferation and extension of abundant illegal dumps in many corners of our term, some of them with the aggravated addition of the existence of uralites and asbestos that, as is known, constitute a dangerous waste.

This is the case of the rubbish dump located in the vicinity of the Rafael Méndez Hospital or the existing one in the vicinity of Abellaneda Street and the upper neighborhoods of San Cristóbal.Sosa began by alluding to the path that overlaps with the first kilometers of the ecotourism route "Vía Augusta", completely abandoned by the City Council and which runs in its first section between the urban channel of the Guadalentín, La Peñica and the ramblas that drain into that channel at the height of the Cejo de los Enamorados.

It is, in the opinion of the mayor of IU-V, a route with enormous potential, widely used these days and which currently has hundreds of illegal dumps. In Pedro Sosa's opinion, the tons of rubble that contaminate a natural and historical area such as the one mentioned are only possible due to the passivity of all the administrations with powers so that this does not happen: that of the State, through the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), which has powers (and therefore obligations) in the protection of the public hydraulic domain, that of the Autonomous Community that has them through the General Directorate of the Natural Environment, and that of the local Government of Lorca, which is who In its day it tried to value an ecotourism route with important heritage, natural and cultural values, which, to this day, must be without much fear of being wrong "the worst attended, cared for and preserved" in Spain. The IU-V Councilor affirms that the City Council, at the proposal of IU, has already approved on several occasions that it is going to restore the area environmentally and that it is willing to plan the plantation, on the margins of a stretch of the river around a dozen kilometers (between La Peñica and el Cejo), of a large wooded promenade with examples of gallery forest (poplars, poplars, elms, etc.) that contribute to discourage the uncivil attitudes of those who throw debris where they should not.

An initiative that, in Sosa's opinion, would also involve local associations for the defense of the environment, and that it should be accompanied by a municipal information campaign (on the existence of places enabled to receive rubble free of charge to Lorca residents) to raise awareness (about the ecological damage caused by throwing rubble in the territory) and also to sanction (fines) and reparation of the damage caused to those who do not attend to the above. This idea will be raised again by IU in the ordinary plenary session in November and, if by the end of the year we see that the local government does nothing (we are used to it), Sosa maintains that our intention is to raise the situation of Lorca directly before the Ministry of Ecological Transition directed by Teresa Ribera.
