Its owner, a neighbor of Lorca, has been proposed for sanction for the irregular possession and commercialization of the pieces. Civil guards of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) began the investigation when they learned of the sale of several pieces of ivory through a well-known second-hand goods sale website. The agents investigated until they identified the person behind the announcement, which allowed their location, as well as the three ivory crucifixes and an ornamental elephant tusk that were offered on the website. The alleged male offender and resident of Lorca has been proposed for sanction for an administrative violation of Organic Law 12/1995, of December 12, on the Repression of Smuggling. Ivory ornamental pieces Objects made with elephant ivory (Loxodonta africana, Elephas maxima), are included in Annex A of Council Regulation (EC), 338/1997, of December 9, 1996, regarding the protection of species from the wild fauna and flora by controlling trade. This regulation, in its article 8, prohibits re-exportation, purchase, offer to purchase, acquisition and exposure to the public for commercial purposes, as well as the use for profit-making purposes and the sale, sale, transportation or the possession for sale of the species listed in the aforementioned annex, among which are African and Asian elephants. There are exemptions regarding its internal trade and re-export to third countries, which must be documented by means of a certification issued by the CITES administrative authority.
