An investment of € 750,000 from the PP government allows progress in the recovery of the cloister of the Carmen church to house the Museum of the Via Crucis (20/11/2020)

The Popular Party's commitment to the rehabilitation of Lorca's monuments continues to add good news, after the works that were carried out in Santo Domingo, San Francisco, San Mateo, the Patronal Sanctuary, San Cristóbal and San Patricio.

The rehabilitation of the Historical Literary Casino continues. The Councilor for Culture in the town hall of Lorca for the Popular Party, Francisco Javier Martínez, has reported that the new investment of 750,000 euros approved by the regional government of the Popular Party for the church of Carmen will allow a decisive advance to the works of recovery and integral rehabilitation of the annex of the temple, with the aim that it can host the Museum of the Via Crucis, one of the milestones longed for by the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Forgiveness, Paso Morado. We are talking about 750,000 euros that will be used, specifically, in the restoration of the cloister of the Church, after granting the final approval by the regional government of Fernando López Miras.

The work will focus on the restoration of the main bay and north side of the cloister, which presents considerable damage that makes it necessary to undertake its rehabilitation.

The amount of the subsidy will be allocated in three annual installments, corresponding to the financial year 2020 the payment of 319,000 euros, 300,000 euros in 2021 and the remaining 131,000 euros in 2022.

The granting of this subsidy is financed by a loan from the European Investment Bank ( BEI) for the Lorca earthquake. The purpose of the subsidy is to recover the historical heritage devastated by the Lorca earthquake of May 11, 2011, including the aforementioned property in the Master Plan for the Recovery of the Cultural Heritage of Lorca, approved by the Council of Ministers on 28 October 2011, which contains the list of assets affected by the earthquake. Francisco Javier Martínez has underlined that from the Popular Party, after the earthquakes, we have already invested 600,000 euros for the consolidation and rehabilitation of the church of Carmen, an action that included the repair of cracks produced in the walls and vaults, the reinforcement of the arches of the transept, central and lateral nave, and the arrangement of the roofs, elements all affected by seismic movements, as well as the stabilization of the main façade, which also lost its verticality after the earthquake, leaving it in a state with the threat of overturning .

In the area of ??the old cloister, the works allowed the clearing of the area and the stabilization of the walls of one of its pandas that collapsed after the 2012 floods. The recovery works of the Claustro del Carmen, which are already underway, have a global budget of 1.4 million euros, and consist of recovering the main bay, together with the basement vault and the two floors on the upper floors, through the structural reinforcement of the brick thread vault and the old wooden floors.

Likewise, a ventilation chamber has been built in the ground and the vaults of the first bay of the Cloister have been recovered that were dismantled after the earthquakes of May 11, 2011.

Both the vault of the south bay and the upper deck have been completed and reconstruction of the north bay is now beginning. The Temple of Carmen is a jewel of the heritage of the Region of Murcia, and was recognized through its declaration as a Site of Cultural Interest in 2009, with the category of Monument.

The main objective of this restoration is to house the Museum of the Via Crucis of the brotherhood of the Santísimo Cristo del Perdón, Paso Morado. Francisco Javier Martínez has urged the current mayor to speed up as much as possible the processes still pending for the execution of the different projects for the recovery of the monumental heritage of our city that have secured funding from the regional government of the Popular Party, including to point out the musealization of the Guevara Palace and the consolidation of the Escarambrujo Mill hydraulic complex.

These are two projects that have to be completed before the end of 2021, but Mr.

Mateos has not yet seen fit or commissioned the works, so we are very afraid that they will have to be executed "quickly and quickly" because of the terrible planning regarding the mayor of the socialists.
