The City Council of Lorca restores the historic Fuente del Caño that will be installed next to the main door of the Huerto de La Rueda (20/11/2020)

Isabel Casalduero: "the restoration and relocation of the source of Santa Quiteria shows the commitment and the work that this Government team has with Lorca's heritage and its value as it involves the recovery of one more element within the heritage wealth of Lorca ". The Councilor for Local Development of the City Council of Lorca, Isabel Casalduero, has announced the recovery and relocation of the Fuente del Caño de Santa Quiteria. Casalduero explained that "continuing with the firm objective that this government team has, not only to properly maintain Lorca's heritage, but also to recover historical elements.

Therefore, from the Lorca City Council through the Local Development Department we have restored the Fuente de Santa Quiteria, popularly known as Fuente del Caño ". The mayor has detailed that "the Fuente del Caño, which was dismantled due to the construction of the IFELOR Fairgrounds and which was stored in municipal buildings, after a meticulous restoration process, will be installed in a new location, next to the main access from the Huerto de La Rueda Enclosure, a location very close to its initial position and which will provide this element of Lorca's heritage with great visibility ". "The actions that have been necessary for the rehabilitation and recovery of the source and that have been carried out by a local company, have consisted of restoring it with the cleaning and consolidation of the parts of the source, the reproduction of the stones loss of the sandstone base with similar characteristics to the original, the assembly of the fountain in its new location next to the Huerto de la Rueda and the execution of the waterproofing, sealing and water-repellent treatment of the same ". Casalduero Jódar has indicated that "will be carried out the demolition of the pavement of the sidewalk where it is going to be located to make a base with a concrete base, the placement of a slab paving and the realization of all the trenches and replacements of pavements for provide the area with water and electrical service for its operation and, also, the pipes, the electrical supply wiring and the source protection and control panel will be installed and, in addition, the drinking water supply pipes and the water drive pump ". "The investment, made by the City Council of Lorca for the recovery of this patrimonial element, amounts to 18,000 euros and the term of execution of the intervention is estimated around one month of work". The Councilor for Local Development has recalled that "the Fountain of 'El Caño' is part of the network of pipes and fountains that were built between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries to bring the waters of Zarzadilla de Totana to Lorca and serve for public water supply to residents of the Santa Quiteria neighborhood, as well as for watering animals and as a nearby irrigation system with excess water ". Isabel Casalduero has insisted that "the restoration and relocation of the source of Santa Quiteria highlights the commitment and work that this government team has with Lorca's heritage and its enhancement as it involves the recovery of one more element within the heritage wealth of Lorca, a memory of our hydraulic history with three centuries of antiquity and that joins the different sources that we find in our municipality such as the Negrito, the Estrella, the Oro and the Ibreño sources, the last vestiges of the supply of drinking water to the population in the past ".
