The councilors of the City of Lorca unite to advance equality between women and men (26/11/2020)

As a sign of unity and recognition of the work carried out in the municipality by the Federation of Women's Organizations of Lorca (FOML), they also request a new public space for their headquarters, which allows them to optimize resources and develop all their potential of service to the citizenship The eleven women councilors of the City Council of Lorca have joined in the elaboration of a motion with which they will proclaim "equality between women and men" in the Plenary of the Corporation next Monday, November 30, and will express their firm commitment "to remove all obstacles that prevent its full materialization in our municipality.

" The authors of the agreement are Mayte Martínez Sánchez, María de las Huertas García Pérez, Rosa Medina Mínguez and Belén Pérez Martínez, for the Popular Municipal Group; Isabel María Casalduero Jódar, Nines Mazuecos Moreno, María Dolores Chumillas Martínez, Irene Jódar Pérez and Antonia Pérez Segura, for the Municipal Socialist Group; Gloria Martín Rodríguez for the one from Izquierda Unida-Verdes; and Carmen Menduiña for VOX. They, on behalf of all the political parties with institutional representation in the City Council (PP, PSOE, IU-Verdes, VOX and Ciudadanos), have expressed their willingness to jointly address "the effective changes that lead us to be a Lorca more egalitarian, fair and democratic ". "Faced with our legitimate ideological differences, we are determined to make our municipal vocation prevail, which has to do with the exercise of a close policy, in permanent contact with our neighbors, built from each neighborhood and each hamlet", state the councilors, who assure that "beyond the logical partisan confrontation", in the municipal sphere, "our gaze must be unequivocally directed to the real and daily problems of the citizenry." In the motion they assure that crises of any kind affect women and girls differently compared to men, also the one related to the pandemic caused by Covid-19.

"We are in the front line in the fight against the virus as workers and professionals in services that have been declared essential and cannot be postponed", such as in the field of care for the elderly, cleaning or health.

While it is women who perform up to three times more unpaid care work, the councilors of the City of Lorca have wanted to recognize this "over-effort" and appeal to the need to strengthen public services and end the allocation of roles in domestic and family tasks according to gender. The signatories of the motion have recognized that, on a personal level, they have also had to remove obstacles related to their simple condition as women, "from the glass ceiling that continues to make it difficult for us to access leadership positions to the difficulties in being able to reconcile the political activity with the raising of our sons and daughters ".

For this reason, they assure that these experiences "should help us not to forget those who suffer, undoubtedly the most serious, those we are proud to represent." In this regard, they have assured that they will continue to defend the advance of the feminization of municipal corporations, "from the conviction that the perspective of women must be taken into account in the formulation of public policies" and that "the concept of democracy will only have a true meaning when decision-making is carried out jointly by men and women, and they pay equal attention to the interests and needs of both halves of the population.

" As a sign of unity and a gesture of recognition of the work carried out in the municipality by the Federation of Women's Organizations of Lorca (FOML), the motion will also serve to provide a new public space for its headquarters, "which allows it to optimize resources and develop their full potential of service to citizens ". "The FOML is, without a doubt, the entity that integrates and represents the largest number of women's associations in our municipality and, without fear of making mistakes, is also one of the largest women's organizations in the Region of Murcia." For this reason, the councilors understand that "the commitment demonstrated in favor of the Lorca society deserves to be provided with a new physical headquarters that does not limit its assistance and training capacity, so that it can benefit as many neighbors as possible." The councilors also express the support and recognition of the entire Corporation for the 'Carmen' project developed by the FOML, which pursues the objective of providing greater independence and empowerment to women in the municipality who are at risk or who wish to improve their employment situation, and they undertake "to seek the necessary financing for its maintenance in successive editions". For her part, the president of this entity, Pilar Fernández, has said that she feels "satisfied" and "proud" that the councilors have shown unanimous criteria in defense of equality and has asked that "the unity they have demonstrated has vocation of permanence ", because" we need them to lend us their voice every time we Lorca ask to be heard in our Town Hall.
