The Paso Azul Labrador Brotherhood and the Paso Azul Foundation begin the recovery of the altarpieces of the Holy Cross and Blood of Christ and that of the Virgin and Child (26/11/2020)

Through the Paso Azul Foundation, the brotherhood's commitment to the preservation of its rich heritage is reaffirmed and, through the company specialized in restoration Lorquimur, the rehabilitation of two wooden reliefs, two soldiers and 10 cornucopias, jewels of the Murcian Baroque, begins with which the brotherhood and the city of Lorca are lucky to have. The Hermandad de Labradores, Paso Azul, continues with the firm commitment that the brotherhood, through the Paso Azul Foundation, has with respect to the care and maintenance of the rich heritage that it has and whose greatness, history and conservation of both the church of San Francisco, the religious headquarters of the Brotherhood, as well as the internal elements that it houses, position it as one of the great jewels of the Murcian Baroque. The commitment that Paso Azul has towards its heritage is demonstrated in each act, with each step and in each decision and, on this occasion, and thanks to the immense work that the Paso Azul Foundation has carried out since its birth, it has been possible to put into two restoration interventions are underway, which will be carried out in different phases.

The first of the interventions is carried out on the altarpiece of the Holy Cross and Blood of Christ, located to the left of the main altar of the church, and the second on the altarpiece of the Virgin and Child, located in what is known as the Chapel of San Antonio, to the right of the main altar. Specifically, the intervention that has begun in the altarpiece of the Santa Vera Cruz and Sangre de Cristo is in the two polychrome wooden reliefs located in the lower part of it and that due to the passage of time, environmental factor damage (humidity, temperature, lighting and pollution) and the damage caused by the 2011 earthquakes make an intervention that includes cleaning and reintegration work necessary to restore its original appearance. The works will consist of cleaning the wood, surface dirt and polychrome; the consolidation of the gilding layer and the polychrome layers as well as the gaps, fissures and separations and the reintegration of the support, both of small and large volumes, reintegration of the polychrome layer. It should be noted that the polychrome relief to the left of the altarpiece shows Jesus still nailed to the Cross, with the Holy Spirit on it, he is on a huge vat of those used in wine presses, spilling over it the blood that flows from his hands, feet and side, a scene that symbolizes the relationship between the Sacred Blood of Christ and the wine consecrated in the Eucharist.

While the relief located on the right, which is almost completely lost, you can identify the figure of a baby that should be in the arms of the male figure with priest's attire, being able to stage at Birth, the Adoration of the Magi or even Circumcision. Also in this altarpiece, we will proceed to restore the sides, elements that make up an auction that, after its rich decoration, hides two cabinets and those that we see represented two knights in half armor and helmets and with their heads turned towards the altarpiece , perhaps on guard attitude.

Some works consisting of cleaning by removing dirt deposits and the reintegration of the support and the corrupted shapes and colors, so that the lost iconographic composition is recovered without distorting its originality. Regarding the intervention of the exterior of the altarpiece of the Virgin and the Child, the eleven cornucopies with mirrors that border the exterior of the altarpiece are going to be restored where the sculpture of the 'Virgin of the Pear 'by means of cleaning work to eliminate dirt deposits, reintegration of the support, the lost shapes and colors so that its original appearance is recovered as well as its reflection effect. Both interventions, carried out by the Lorquine company specialized in restoration, Lorquimur, and in charge of the restorer Lucia Rueda Querol, will be carried out under the appropriate premises in all restoration processes and in accordance with the criteria currently followed internationally in terms of maximum respect for the original works and the minimum necessary intervention.

Likewise, due to the degree of cataloging of the property, said actions on the altarpieces have been expressly authorized by the Restoration Center of the General Directorate of Culture of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia. The restoration works have been presented this morning by the President of Paso Azul José María Miñarro, together with the president of the Paso Azul Foundation, María del Sagrado Corazón García; the president of the Virgen de los Dolores Association, Joaquina Gil, the councilors of Holy Week and Culture of the City of Lorca, José Luis Ruiz Guillén and María Ángeles Mazuecos and the director of Lorquimur, Ginés Méndez.
