The Lorca City Council inaugurates the monument in homage to people who died from HIV on World AIDS Day (01/12/2020)

Diego José Mateos: "This monument not only aims to serve to remember people who died of AIDS, but also as an element that makes the disease visible and ends the social stigmatization and discrimination that people living with HIV still suggest today"The mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos, this morning presided over the institutional act of inauguration of the monument in tribute to those who died from HIV, coinciding with World AIDS Day.Mateos explained that “every December 1 World AIDS Day is commemorated and, this year, from the Lorca City Council we have wanted to make this date coincide with the inauguration of the monument to those who died from this disease as well as to people who suffer from it ”.

"In one of the most significant areas of our municipality, in the heart of the popular 'Alamedas', as Lorca and Lorca we know affectionately this green lung of the urban area, specifically in Alameda de la Constitución is where we find this already located This monument is not only intended to serve to remember the people who died from AIDS, but also as an element that makes the disease visible and ends the social stigmatization and discrimination that people living with HIV still suggest today ”.

The Mayor has recalled that "the placement of this monolith complies with several agreements approved in the plenary session of this Consistory because, in addition, from the City Council of Lorca we have been developing awareness campaigns and, also, we are going to implement actions of a training nature for the prevention of HIV-AIDS in the educational and associative context, through prevention workshops and affective sexual education, in agreement with the educational community and school councils ”."We also continue to ask the Ministry of Health of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia the implementation of 'Edusex', a program on affective and sexual health for adolescents in secondary education centers in Lorca, as they make up one of the groups more vulnerable if they are not properly informed ”.

Mateos Molina has detailed that “during the period 2009 - 2019, the number of new cases diagnosed has been 1,216.

The data show that 90 percent of the infections are sexually transmitted, with 82 percent of the new infections in men and the age group between 30 and 34 being the most affected.

An incidence of new HIV diagnoses in the Region that is lower than the average for Spain throughout the period studied, but which in recent years has increased and has been approaching a state incidence that, on the contrary, has been decreasing ”.

“As for the data in Health Area III, in this same period of time, there are 129 new cases diagnosed, amounting to 20 new cases in the last year and positioning this area in the second with the highest incidence in the Region of Murcia ”.Diego José Mateos has insisted that “the number of infections reinforces our firm belief in continuing to work to raise awareness about prevention, for which the use of condoms is essential; early diagnosis since around half of HIV-infected patients cannot benefit adequately from antiretroviral treatments, since they are diagnosed late and, of course, end discrimination against people affected by this disease, since their stigmatization does not do more than to increase their suffering, being the responsibility of the whole society to avoid their social exclusion and the feeling of rejection they suffer ”.
