[Procedures begin for the La Hoya pilgrimage to become a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest (05/12/2020)

All the parties with municipal representation, including IU and Vox, agreed to support the initiative. It is the only place in Spain that is known to hold a Christmas event at the beginning of February. The Romer a de la Salud, one of the main festivals of the Lorca district of La Hoya, could soon become a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, after the support achieved by the City Council of Lorca and all the political parties represented in it. The Association of Mayordomos of the parish of La Hoya has decided to initiate the file requesting that the pilgrimage be declared of Regional Tourist Interest, after having the support of about twenty associations and entities of said pedan a, and after at the end of October the plenary session of the Lorca City Council expressed its support for said pilgrimage, achieving a rare unanimity that united PSOE, PP, Vox, Izquierda Unida-Verdes and Citizens in defense of this tradition. The Romer a de la Salud has been celebrated in La Hoya (with 4,000 inhabitants, the most populous district of Lorca) since a long time ago; It is the only place in Spain that has a reference that they continue to celebrate Christmas until February. The festivities in honor of the Virgen de la Salud begin at the beginning of December, when the residents of La Hoya go up to the Sierra de Tercia, located in Sierra Espuña, to pick up the patron and bring her down to the district.

After Christmas, on February 2, "snow, rain or shine", thousands of people, coming from La Hoya, from numerous points in the Murcia region and even from neighboring provinces such as Alicante or Almer a, they begin the pilgrimage to return the Virgin to her sanctuary among the mountains. The act that chooses to be declared of Regional Tourist Interest brings together the main elements of typical Lorca and Murcia, such as the groups, the improvised trovos, the regional dances and the typical "cake auction": a gigantic eight-layer cake for which up to 9,000 euros have been paid in a real challenge among the neighbors. All these are the hallmarks of a unique festival, with more than a hundred years of history, which maintains its origins intact despite the innovations that have been introduced little by little; a party that is already known throughout the Region of Murcia and that is intended to happen the same in the rest of Spain.
