[The PP project to create new shady areas and reduce heat in the old town receives the Regional Award for Sustainable Development and Climate Change (14/12/2020)

It is an initiative integrated into the European plan "Life Adaptate", for which work began in 2017, and which allowed the installation of awnings in several streets of the old town, which have lowered the temperature of the zone up to seven degrees.

The city of Lorca has received a new recognition for the management developed by the Popular Party at the head of the town hall.

This is the Award for the Initiative against Climate Change, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture of our Autonomous Community.

The concession of this award recognizes the work carried out by the installation of a system of awnings to generate shady areas and reduce heat in Corredera, P o XII, Alporchones and Almirante Aguilar streets We are talking about a pilot action in the streets of the old town that began in May 2019, consisting of the installation of awnings with the aim of reducing the effects of heat waves and urban heat islands.

For this, shadow corridors will be created through the installation of awnings in several commercial areas and large pedestrian traffic areas of the historic center of Lorca, such as Corredera Street, P o XII, Alporchones and Almirante Aguilar .

The Popular Party created a Citizen Participation Table for the drafting of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan "Life Adaptate Project".

It is a European environmental initiative whose purpose is to adopt measures to combat climate change at the local level.

This pilot project aims to reduce the risks related to the climate in the daily lives of the neighbors by lowering the ambient temperature in the area, making a city more pleasant for pedestrians.

Its objective is to measure the temperature and quantify the benefits obtained for the population and the commercial area of ??these emblematic streets located in the historic center of Lorca.

The objectives of the "Life Adaptate Project" are to reduce the temperature and therefore the thermal sensation of pedestrians; reduce the temperature of facades and pavement created by "microclimates" in cities; combat urban heat waves for the benefit of climate change; reactivate trade in the area in the months of high temperatures due to the demand from merchants; reduce spending on refrigeration of homes and businesses in the area and with them CO2 emissions and the adaptation by city councils to climate change and the rise in temperatures that is expected for years to come .

The awarding of this award is part of the tenth edition of the Murcia Region Sustainable Development and Climate Change Awards, which aim to publicly recognize the efforts made by companies, institutions, organizations and groups of the Region in matters of sustainable development and climate change, and to disseminate those experiences of success and ideas that may be a reference for others.
