[The Department of Crafts presents the activity program of the Casa del Artesano de Lorca (15/03/2021)

The activities planned until July include demonstrations of all the artisan trades that are carried out in Lorca, as well as free courses and exhibitions.

Today, Monday, March 15, the exhibition 'Jarapas de diseño' opens where we can observe the evolution of the jarapa from the 12th century to the present day The vice mayor and councilor for Crafts, Francisco Morales, has presented, together with the president of the Association of Artisans of Lorca (Artelor), Pepe Ortuño, the program of activities of the House of the Artisan of Lorca, which includes the initiatives planned until the month July, which includes demonstrations of all the artisan trades that are practiced in Lorca.

Francisco Morales has reported on the "activities that the Casa del Artesano will offer over the next few months, increasing the content of this municipal space dedicated to local crafts, which can also host cultural activities for anyone interested in the interest of Lorca.

In addition to the exhibitions on offer, a series of courses and demonstrations have been scheduled in order to continue spreading and promoting crafts and artisan products ".

The Councilor for Crafts has encouraged all interested people, from Lorca or other municipalities, to "come to know the Casa del Artesano, which was inaugurated last year but its activity was paralyzed by the declaration of the State of Alarm and due to the successive restrictive measures.

"This is a set of activities prepared with great affection together with the artisans and Artelor, where the master craftsmen will teach the creative process of their works, in some cases live and in others with the result of the same exhibiting their works", has affirmed Morales.

The first of the exhibitions will be that of design jarapas, which opens today, Monday, March 15, and opens its doors until April 10 from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m.

to 2:00 p.m.

and from 4:00 p.m.

to 6:30 p.m.

and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m.

to 2:00 p.m.

In it, works from the 'Coy Artesana', 'Arte Coy', 'Artellano' and 'Jarapas María Martínez and Francisco Ruiz' workshops are exhibited.

Morales has detailed that "the jarapa is originally from our region and is a purely handmade product that has a great future because it is based on sustainability as it is made entirely from the recycling of textile materials, mainly cotton.

It originated in the 12th century.

, when the Arabs introduced the method of making together with the loom and which has been preserved as a tradition by artisans.

Due to the way they are made, all jarapas are different and unique, which makes them an exclusive product ".

Also, the vice mayor has revealed "the next handicraft project of the Department of Handicrafts together with the Department of Tourism, for which he is also responsible: a tourist route based on Lorca handicrafts, where the rich and diversified offer will be collected.

ACTIVITIES OF THE HOUSE OF ARTISAN OF LORCA (UNTIL 07/31/2021) DEMONSTRATIONS 40 demonstrations that will take place from March to July, on Fridays and Saturdays, from noon to 1 pm.

They will be free and in them we will have artisans performing live demonstrations of the crafts of pottery, ceramics, embroidery, costume jewelery and jewelry, leather goods, headdresses and accessories, stone carving or forging, etc.

JARAPAS COURSE (20 HOURS) 25 of May; June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29; July 6, 13, 20 and 27; from 17 to 19 hours.

In this course, students will be taught to classify recycled material by colors by making balls, to make them quills or churros to start weaving on the loom and to finish the jarapa using knots.

HEADPIECE AND ACCESSORIES COURSE (20 HOURS) May 27; June 3, 10, 17 and 24; July 1, 8, 15, 23 and 29; from 17 to 19 hours.

It teaches how to design a sketch on paper of the garment you want to make, and then choose the materials you need and start working on the headdresses, which can be hats, tiaras, earrings, bags or necklaces, etc.

DESIGN JARAPARAS EXHIBITION From Monday March 15 to Saturday April 10.

The innovation of designs is exhibited in the different jarapas workshops.

In this exhibition we can see the evolution of the jarapa from the 12th century to the present day with a sample of the latest additions to designer rugs.

MONOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION OF DAMIAN TERUEL From April 16 to 30.

Exhibition of the different trades of Damian Teruel, a great craftsman who has worked various crafts, such as designing clothing for large events, making pastry chefs and woodwork.

He has also been an embroidery designer and we can see several of his works from different specialties.

CERAMIC EXHIBITION OF MARTÍN LARIO PÉREZ From May 7 to 22.

Recognition of the dedication to the craftsmanship of Martín Lario Pérez, granting him, posthumously, the Artelor honorary craftsman diploma.

Martín, from his birth, has been a great teacher working with clay since his father, Juan Bautista Lario, had a pottery in the suburb of the San Cristóbal neighborhood.

We will be able to enjoy a wide sample of his works.

NIGHT OF THE MUSEUMS May 15.

Live demonstrations and visits to the Casa del Artesano.

It will be the Night of the Craftsman, where all those who visit the House of the Craftsman will be able to see how the crafts are worked live and have direct contact with all the master craftsmen.

ARTISAN WEEK "ARTELOR" From May 28 to June 12.

The week of the craftsman is directed especially to the educational system and local associations.

In it, all the artisans associated with Artelor will exhibit and there will be demonstrations and workshops of the different trades, as well as a wide exhibition of works made in professional workshops.

The objective of these days will be to make the youngest known the trades that our ancestors have transmitted to us for several centuries, with a view that this legacy can be developed by present and future generations.
