The Ministry of Agriculture and Water has completed the refurbishment of the castle of Lorca slopes to prevent erosion and regulate water resources in this area, which involves an investment of 56,000 euros, financed by the Obra Social La Caixa, and wages have generated 300 work, some of which were for people at risk of social exclusion.
The work has involved the reconstruction of ten gabion walls that were in an advanced state of deterioration, and the construction of two new walls and eight gabion embankments.
It has also been carried out vegetation restoration of degraded areas with native species, such as Aleppo pine, wild olive, rosemary, albaida, mastic, juniper and black hawthorn, among others, in an area of 2.8 hectares.
The director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernandez, said about the main purpose of these actions was "to cushion the erosion on the slope of the castle and reduce the chance of landslides."
Also highlighted the interest of the Department to "improve biodiversity and species richness of this area, the structure and the soil infiltration capacity, as well as encourage existing plant communities to reach developmental series closer to its climatic optimum" .
