Environment concludes emergency work in areas affected by fires last summer (08/03/2016)

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment, Adela Martinez-Cacho, today checked the status of the Sierra del Almirez of Lorca, after completion of the emergency works of the first phase of recovery of the areas affected by the fire last summer.

Martinez-Cacho stressed that "emergency work have been done in record time thanks to the technical and social support of volunteer groups Lorca, who have made a significant contribution to the recovery of the affected area."

In this regard, he explained that "the work has been accelerated by the need to act before natural regeneration starts, to avoid further damage and protect the soil against the possible arrival of rains."

The minister recalled that the recovery plan torched in the Sierra del Almirez land was launched in August 2015, like those of Almadenes Canyon and the Sierra del Almorchón environment.

The Action Plan in Lorca, whose development is estimated at 10 years, has a total budget of 1,805,154 euros.

Of these, 595,972 euros have already been invested.

It consists of five large blocks of shares: precautionary measures, emergency, ecological regeneration, environmental monitoring and volunteer and outreach.

The fire destroyed 228.22 hectares of which 92.1 percent (210.20 hectares) were of Mediterranean forest of Aleppo pine, 6.45 percent (14.72 hectares) of scrub, grasslands and firewalls and, finally, 1.45 percent (3.3 hectares) of farmland.

Improving rural roads

One of the most important actions taken during these first months has been to cut the burned trees, about 136.85 hectares, whose residues have been used to lessen the impact of torrential rains and restore the hydrological network of the mountain.

Complementary to these actions, work has been done to ensure access to areas of action.

Thus, it has acted in five forest roads (Collado de la Vaca, La Cantera on the sunny side of the fire, Curve Romana, the Garita del Almirez and two other paths that run through the sunny side of the fire) by improving the firm, opening and drain ditches to retain rainwater, construction of ditches and culverts to promote cross drainage and the contribution of clayey gravel in those sections that are difficult to move in case of rain.

The forest system lost multiple features that will recognize the Mediterranean ecosystem, including absorbing the kinetic energy of the drops of torrential rain on impact with the tops of Aleppo pine, juniper blackberry, mastic, juniper and Kermes;

water retention;

encourage infiltration;

maintain soil fertility;

significantly reduce surface runoff;

serve as natural habitats support vegetation or constitute habitats of wildlife species in danger of extinction.

In this regard, the fire destroyed the carbon sink 28,500 tons of CO2 sequestered and served, among other things, as a refuge for various species of wildlife, some as emblematic as the golden eagle, eagle owl or peregrine falcon.
