IU-Green calls a "real" plan to combat desertification Lorca (02/11/2016)

Within a decade the City has only contributed to the reforestation of 13,860 trees.

Minimal effort when compared with other much less extensive Lorca and Malaga municipalities (50,000 trees), Cuéllar (56.000) or Villacañas, Toledo (80,000).

Gloria Martin estimated that with the planting of 90,000 and less than 300,000 euros investment, nearly 150 degraded hectares were recovered, nearly 30,000 tons of CO2 offset and more than a thousand local employment wages would be created.

United Left-Greens Lorca has today asked the government team of PP increased efforts in the fight against desertification in the municipality.

Councilwoman of this training, Gloria Martin, referred to a recent report by the Research Group 'Mediterranean Ecosystems' of the University of Murcia, coordinated by Professor Miguel Angel Esteve, who throws bleak figures.

In recent years the Region of Murcia has lost a half million trees by drought, withering action of borers and the effects of climate change.

Studies conducted by the agricultural organization COAG, also suggest that one of the areas most affected by desertification in the autonomous community is the one that encompasses the districts high Lorca.

Experts say that we are in a variation of the overall ecological scenario in our region and in the coming years will die much of the inland forests that constitute "the last frontier in the desert."

Front warnings from experts, environmental groups and self Izquierda Unida, the municipal response to the threat of desertification is "poor and inadequate", according to Martin, who recalled that in the last decade, the city of Lorca it has only contributed to the planting of 13,860 trees.

This effort is "minimal" compared with reforestation work carried out in other far less extensive Lorca municipalities such as Málaga (50,000 trees), Cuéllar (56.000) or Villacañas, Toledo (80,000).

Councilwoman IU recalled that in 2014 the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, claimed that "the advance of desertification is a problem that we are obliged to stop now, or pay the consequences the next generations of Lorca."

Martin said that the concern expressed by the mayor is not proportional to the effort made by the consistory at which he urged convert reforestation and the creation of new tree stands "a priority and permanent activity on the agenda of the City".

In addition to combat erosion, CO2 capture one of the leading European states in polluting gases emission and thus contribute to the effective fight against climate change, the establishment and consolidation of a "green economy" would impact positively also creating local employment and increased generation of SMEs around the agro-forestry sector.

In that sense, Martin estimated that in Lorca, with the planting of 90,000 trees and less than 300,000 euros investment, nearly 150 degraded hectares were recovered, nearly 30,000 tons of CO2 offset and more than a thousand wages to be created local employment.

Therefore, he encouraged the government team PP boost "with deeds and not words" an "ambitious, courageous and effective" environmental policy in the fight against desertification and other consequences of predatory behavior of our species by protecting and expanding natural capital as best legacy for generations to come.
