The Mayor of Lorca and the Councilor of Culture visit the restoration works of the Collegiate Church of San Patricio de Lorca (08/11/2016)

Restoration work carried out in the Collegiate Church of San Patricio de Lorca, and included in the Master Plan for the Recovery of Cultural Heritage of Lorca that started after the earthquakes of 2011 by the Autonomous Community, the central government and the City Council, have Entered its last phase.

The Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, and the Minister of Culture and spokesman of the regional government, Noelia Arroyo, visited this morning the Collegiate of San Patricio and the House of Marin-Ponce de Leon, one of the protected buildings of the historic center Of the city where recovery work is being completed.

The project for the restoration of the Collegiate has a total budget of 4.37 million euros, of which the Community contributes about 70 percent, just over three million euros.

Among the works that have been completed is the recovery of sixteenth-century figurative paintings or geometric motifs that were found a year ago and which had remained hidden in various parts of the church.

Arroyo said that "within a few months citizens will be able to enjoy this property listed as a Property of Cultural Interest, which has the greatest protection by the Community and is considered the most important and interesting temple from a constructive point of view After the Cathedral of Murcia ".

The earthquakes in 2011 "caused structural damage as well as non-structural and decorative elements, whose repair is already executed at 85 percent, giving back all its splendor to this construction of great wealth and cultural value that will be the symbol of the resurgence of The city of Lorca ".

The Collegiate Church of San Patricio, whose title corresponds to the Bishopric of Cartagena, is a building of Renaissance style that was declared National Historical-Artistic Monument by decree of January 27, 1941. This temple is the cornerstone of the monumental complex of the Plaza de Spain, next to the Town Hall, the Corregidor Palace and the Capitular Rooms.

Its construction began in 1533 on the old church of San Jorge and was extended until 1780 following the project of Jerónimo Quijano, master of the Works of the Bishopric of Cartagena.

Conceived with cathedral airs, its interior is articulated in three naves, twelve lateral chapels in the buttresses, chorus and trascoro, girola with radial chapels and bell tower in the head.

House of the Marin-Ponce de León

Regarding the House of the Marines-Ponce de León, it was built in the early 17th century and finished in 1630. The house stands out for its beautiful front and the statue of San Vicente Ferrer, which had attached to one of the Corners of its facade and that was placed on a column of Roman time.

The works that are practiced in this manor house are also expected to be completed in the first quarter of the year.

The Community has contributed 339,532 euros of the total budget for its restoration, which amounts to 484,180 euros.

Thus, it has ensured the use of this historic building, with Degree 2 protection, as housing and conditioning and improvement of all facilities.

The intervention on private houses of singular importance for Lorca currently reaches an investment of more than 1.4 million euros, which is divided among five buildings that have recovered or are recovering from the consequences of the earthquake.

These actions have been carried out, in addition to the Ponce de Leon, in the houses of Doctor López de Teruel (220,000 euros), the O'Shea (140,000 euros), Aragon (270,000 euros) and the Irurita (430,000 euros ).

After visiting both properties, Noelia Arroyo highlighted "the commitment of the regional government with Lorca and the recovery of all its heritage," as well as "the constant and fruitful collaboration between the different administrations and the work done by the Bishop."

Specifically, the work of the master plan is ending, with 90 percent of the BIC and 80 percent of the properties cataloged completely restored or in process.

"We have acted on dozens of buildings, preserving their structure, restoring the splendor of their façades and rehabilitating the damaged assets. Our interest is not only to leave them as they were, but even better," added the head of Culture, who Recalled that "the work done in Lorca has become an international example of good practices and has been recognized with awards such as Hispania Nostra.
