The PSOE proposes the construction of a University Residence in the Historical Center and the third degree to develop the Campus (18/11/2016)

For the PSOE, the recovery of the Historical Center of the city and the development of the University Campus should be basic pillars that support the immediate future of Lorca.

For this reason, they present measures aimed at promoting university life in Lorca, approaching it to the Historical Center and contributing to its necessary revitalization

The councilors of the PSOE in the City of Lorca, María Ángeles Mazuecos and David Romera, have stated that "the immediate future of the city passes irremediably by the recovery of the Historic Center and the enhancement of the University Campus through the implementation of the Second phase of the Faculty of Sociosanitary Sciences and the implementation of the third Degree of Occupational Therapy ".

These issues "are fundamental for the development of Lorca and it is necessary that all the agents involved remix in the same direction, without political considerations, seeking the common benefit of all Lorca," the councilors said.

Nines Mazuecos has once again claimed the implementation of the third degree in the Campus, Occupational Therapy, as demanded in the plenary a few months ago, in which they achieved the unanimous agreement of the whole corporation.

However, she regrets the lack of concreteness and respect that the Councilor for Universities had because of this agreement, since "she has been unable to show any interest in the necessary implementation of this new degree in Lorca."

Mazuecos has once again highlighted the great effort that the decanal team, the student delegation and the University consortium are carrying out to strengthen the Lorca campus.

"An extraordinary human team that fights daily for this campus to continue", which is added by the PSOE's willingness to "not cease in the effort to ensure that the development of the University of Lorca is not tarnished by the inoperability of policy makers Which have in their hands the development and expansion of the campus of Lorca. "

If these objectives are achieved, David Romera argues that the number of students would grow significantly in the short term, "which will mean" an increase in student demand that will make it necessary to create a University Residence in Lorca that today would still not be profitable Economically because of the low number of students who have the Campus de Lorca, which is around 500. Students who reside in Lorca rent apartments especially in the neighborhoods of San Cristóbal, San Diego, Armed Forces and Apolonia.

In this sense, Romera points out that "the location of this residence should be located in the historic center of the city to act as a focus to help the recovery of our monumental area, which is a more attractive place to live and economic activity".

It would be, exposes the councilman, "a very valuable incentive that would give life to the Historic District with this floating population that, in addition, has demands that must be satisfied on a commercial and service level", because he understands that " Monumental area of Lorca, in addition to submitting its monumental buildings to a deep restoration and to encourage the repopulation of the enclosure, also goes through the recovery of its economic and business fabric.

David Romera, stated that "its location inside the Historic District can offer multiple options given the existing buildings and lots of municipal ownership, many of them converted into obsolete spaces where weeds and garbage accumulate," but notes that "also Would be the option to acquire one of the large Palace-Houses that are distributed by the monumental zone ".

This is something that has been done in many university cities "and Lorca can not be less.

The House of the Guevara in the street Juan II next to the Glorieta de San Vicente, the House of the Irurita at the end of the Corredera, the House of the Clock in Alfonso X the Sage or the old House of the Dairy in the corner of the Streets Pío XII and Zorrilla, could potentially be used as University Residence.

Finally, Romera proposes that with the installation of a University Residence in the Historic District, in addition to dynamizing this depressed area socially and economically, "there is a unique opportunity to attract university students from the Campus to the downtown area and who are participants Of the daily life of Lorca, because at the moment, a good part of the students of the Campus does not know the marvelous patrimony that encloses the city and does not enjoy its services ".
